About us
The Boston Foundation is one of the nation’s first and most impactful community foundations, with $1.9 billion in assets. Partnering with community members, donors, the public sector, businesses and nonprofits, we exist to close the gaps caused by our city’s greatest disparities, to advance economic justice, and to help build a better Boston. We collect data, commission research, share knowledge, develop dynamic programs, fuel new ideas and fund change. Our work informs public policy, catalyzes conversations and advocates not only for change, but for repair of the historical harms of inequity. Ultimately, we aim to support, contribute and create well-being and opportunity within our communities. TBF is also one of New England’s largest grantmakers, supporting nonprofits in Greater Boston through our endowment and working closely with our donors to support nonprofits locally, nationally and internationally.

Boys and men—especially from lower-income and Black and Latino communities—can face significant challenges. Men account for roughly three-quarters of opioid overdose and suicide deaths. By high school, boys lag girls academically. Shifting job markets have led to declining male employment rates, especially for those without a college degree. Recognizing these disparities, Boston Indicators partnered with the American Institute for Boys and Men (AIBM) on the report, 'Boys & Men in Greater Boston: Challenges in Education, Employment, and Health.' Join us on March 6th at 9:30 AM for the report release event featuring remarks by Founding President of AIBM and author of 'Boys and Men' Richard V. Reeves, a presentation of the report, and a panel discussion. Learn more & register: https://bit.ly/4i5vr7G

Opportunity for students: Many of the scholarship and college success programs The Philanthropic Initiative (TPI) supports on behalf of clients are now open and accepting applications! TPI's college success programs help to level the playing field for young people who may be the first generation in their family to attend college and who face significant financial and other challenges. Most opportunities are for high school seniors entering four-year colleges or current college students, but TPI also administers a scholarship for second-career nursing students. Help us spread the word to your networks and anyone who might benefit from these opportunities and you can help connect individuals with valuable resources to support their educational journeys. The geographic center of Boston and the heart of our Black community, Nubian Square has a rich past and a dynamic present with an abundance of culture, education, and economic development. As we celebrate the final week of Black History Month, TBF is proud to support and uplift the redevelopment of Nubian Square, with deep investments in a number of nonprofit institutions that play key roles in the community: - Tapping into our commitment to spatial justice, TBF supports Franklin Cummings Tech’s new state-of-the-art campus, a permanent home for The BASE, and Roxbury Community College's new Center for Economic and Social Justice: https://bit.ly/3Yvi9ui - Boston's first Neighborhood Birth Center is slated to open in 2026, with TBF support: https://bit.ly/3QL1KgB - Watch a video that highlights RCC's new Center for Economic and Social Justice as part of our Economic Opportunity pathway: https://bit.ly/3ENSaXp Nubian Square’s transformation is catalyzed through these spaces and community-wide efforts to drive development, spark civic engagement, and promote economic revitalization as we all work collectively to close the racial wealth gap.

A more equitable Boston and region really does begin at the beginning—with our youngest community members. If we don’t get that right, everything that follows is harder. That’s why TBF has made Child Well-Being a priority and one of our four pathways to equity. Nurturing healthy communities and healthy environments is essential to our work. The Winter 2025 edition of TBF News takes a closer look at the wide range of powerful work in our Child Well-Being pathway, highlighting our support for maternal health and advocacy for expanding much-needed early education and care access. “It is our shared responsibility to try to create equity, not only for the individual who would benefit from that scholarship or that grant or loan, but for our entire society.” - Orlando Watkins, vice president and chief program officer at TBF. As the racial wealth gap continued to widen, designating funds to support communities of color is crucial to bridging this gap. The Trump administration’s anti-DEI proclamations have had “a real chilling effect” on organizations TBF partners with, but we remain committed to funding communities of color alongside social service organizations that serve LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, and other vulnerable populations.
