With Paul currently on sabbatical, let's travel back and look at the very first blog he wrote for BGCI - he asks the question, who will fight for biodiversity? And with the sector having just finished CBD COP-16, this question is still relevant as we plan next steps for our efforts to protect the natural world. #BGCIBlog #BiodiversityCrisis #PlantConservation #GlobalConservationNetwork

We mobilise botanic gardens and engage partners in securing plant diversity for the well-being of people and the planet.
About us
Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) is a membership organisation, representing botanic gardens in more than 100 countries around the world. It is an independent UK charity established in 1987 to link the botanic gardens of the world in a global network for plant conservation. We aim to support and empower our members and the wider conservation community, so that our knowledge and expertise can be applied to reversing the threat of extinction facing plants. Our vision is a world in which plant diversity is valued, secure and supporting all life, and our mission is: To mobilise botanic gardens and engage partners in securing plant diversity for the well-being of people and the planet. The BGCI network of botanic gardens includes: globally significant living plant collections, covering approximately a third of known plant diversity; world class seed banks, glass houses and tissue culture infrastructures, and; technical knowledge networks covering all aspects of plant conservation policy, practice and education. BGCI is in a prime position to promote an efficient, cost-effective and rational approach to plant conservation in botanic gardens. As outlined in BGCI’s Business Case and Plan (2015-2020), we do this in four ways by: 1. Leading and advocacy; 2. Leading innovative and strategic projects achieving outcomes in plant conservation policy, practice and education; 3. Co-ordinating efforts and building plant conservation capacity in botanic gardens and broader society; 4. Providing funding.

🌍🌱 For the first time, the majority of the world’s trees have been listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, revealing that 38% are at risk of extinction. With at least 16,425 tree species threatened with extinction the work of botanical gardens worldwide is more essential than ever. At Hortis, we believe that data-driven record-keeping is the foundation of effective conservation efforts. By keeping precise records of plant collections, botanical gardens and institutions contribute invaluable data that informs conservation strategies and safeguards plant biodiversity for future generations. Arabuko Sokoke Forest has been a very important seed source for the Kaya Connect project, owing to the massive biodiversity supported within the forest. Listen to Jes Carey, the CEO of Friends of Arabuko Sokoke Forest describe how the project has been engaging communities, and tapping into the resource in the forest to enable the increase of indigenous seed and seedlings in Kilifi County for forest landscape restoration purposes. This project is funded by the Darwin Initiative. @friendsofarabukosokoke Biodiversity Challenge Funds Botanic Gardens Conservation International #ForestLandscapeRestoration #NativeTreePlanting

Last week saw the publication of the IUCN Red List update which included the Global Tree Assessment. For the first time, the majority of the world’s trees have been listed, they now account for over one quarter of species on the IUCN Red List. 🌍 Highlights from a Landmark Week for The Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS) at #COP16! That’s a wrap for the #TGBS team! From our official launch to new partnerships, this week has been full of milestones that are paving the way for the future of restoration and biodiversity. Here are the highlights: 🎉 Official Launch: We celebrated the launch of The Global Biodiversity Standard at Cali Botanic Gardens! 🏅 First Certified Sites: The event marked a milestone with our first three certified sites, setting a new benchmark for ecosystem restoration. 🎤 Inspiring Keynote: At our launch event, Dr Gemma Harper OBE FAcSS, Chief Executive of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), delivered an empowering speech on the urgency of biodiversity action. 💼 Business & Finance: There is growing interest for private financial investment in restoration projects, but we still need assurance of biodiversity impacts. 🌿 The “Rio Trio” Realisation: There is growing awareness that biodiversity, climate, and land restoration must go hand-in-hand for true impact. 🎤 Engaging Events: We led fireside chats, panels, and a networking evening in the IUCN pavilion with exciting conversations and ideas. 🤝 New Collaborations: We kickstarted exciting partnerships and projects to amplify restoration’s impact globally. 🌍 International Team Unity: Bringing our team together reinforced the power of global collaboration in this movement. As Dame Jane Goodall says, “The Global Biodiversity Standard reminds us of our responsibility to protect our ecosystems, not just for our own survival, but for the future of every living creature with whom we share this planet. My hope is that many more organisations will adopt the measures laid out by the Standard and ensure we regenerate the planet for future generations.” 🌱 #TheGlobalBiodiversityStandard #Biodiversity #Restoration #Collaboration #GenerationRestoration #TGBS Botanic Gardens Conservation International | Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) | CIFOR-ICRAF | TRAFFIC | Plan Vivo Foundation | Ecosia | 1t.org | Centre for Ecosystem Restoration - Kenya | tooro botanical gardens | Missouri Botanical Garden Madagascar Research & Conservation Program | Huarango Nature | Reforest'Action | Bioflore

It’s neigh impossible to overstate what an accomplishment this represents. Nearly 50,000 trees have been assessed on the IUCN Red List. I mean, I can't even believe what I've just written. Back in 2008, we completed a reassessment of all the world’s mammals at the time – some 5,500 species. That alone was a nearly 4-year effort, involving 28 workshops, and contributions from 1,700 experts. To think that nearly one-third of all assessed species on the Red List are now trees is astounding. Sure, there’s a long way to go in assessing many other under-represented groups of plants, fungi and invertebrates, but I really hope folks take pause to reflect on what a gigantic achievement this is. Hats off to all those involved, in particular Botanic Gardens Conservation International, the @IUCN SSC Global Tree Specialist Group, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Conservation International, NatureServe Missouri Botanical Garden and others. And a special nod to those amazing donors who supported this critical work, especially Fondation Franklinia. Now time for action!
🌲🌳 For the first time, the majority of the world’s trees have been listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, revealing that 38% are at risk of extinction. Trees now account for over one quarter of species on the IUCN Red List, and the number of threatened trees is more than double the number of all threatened birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians combined. The latest IUCN Red List Update explains the threats they face and actions to help save them. ➡️ https://shorturl.at/JXsvd #COP16Colombia
