  • 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 Once upon a time, there was a small company on the brink of something great. They had a fantastic product, a solid market, and ambitious goals. But they also faced a critical question—one that would determine whether they would merely survive or truly thrive: Who do we bring on this journey with us? In the early days, the founders were laser-focused on finding the right talent. It wasn’t just about skills or filling seats; they understood that the relationships they built among their team members would shape the company’s culture, its resilience, and ultimately, its success. They had seen companies with the best strategies and the most advanced tools falter because their teams lacked cohesion, trust, and genuine connection. So, they approached hiring differently. They looked for people who were not only talented but who could align with their core values—individuals who valued collaboration over competition, and who cared about the company’s mission as much as they cared about their own growth. One of the key questions they asked during interviews was, “Tell us about a time when you went out of your way to help a colleague succeed.” They believed that *how* people treat each other when no one is watching is the true test of character. The team rallied together during challenges, supported each other during stressful times, and celebrated every win—big or small—as a collective achievement. "𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼; 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵." 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱: When team members trust each other, they communicate openly and can make decisions faster. 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗙𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵: They know that if they stumble, their teammates will be there to help them up, not judge them. This kind of environment is where innovation thrives. 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗘𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁: As Peter Drucker famously said, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” No matter how great a strategy is, it will fail if the culture is toxic or disconnected. When relationships are strong, culture becomes a strategic advantage, helping attract like-minded talent and retaining top performers. • 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿: 𝗔 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵'𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 🧠👥 When it comes to building a strong team, finding candidates who embody the qualities of Patrick Lencioni’s "Ideal Team Player"—humble, hungry, and smart—can make all the difference. But how do you identify these traits during an interview? Let’s dive into a real-life example: Imagine sitting across from a candidate who checks all the boxes on paper. They have the technical skills and relevant experience. But as you dig deeper, you ask, “Tell me about a time when you gave credit to a teammate for a project’s success.” Their response reveals more than you’d expect. They share a story where they took a backseat, allowing a colleague to shine, and emphasized how teamwork led to better results. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. Then, you follow up with, “What’s a project you took on because you were excited to learn something new?” The candidate’s eyes light up as they describe staying late, diving into new challenges, and constantly pushing themselves beyond what was expected. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿. Lastly, you ask about a difficult team situation, “How did you help resolve a disagreement within your team?” They share a story about how they navigated different viewpoints, listened actively, and found a way to bridge communication gaps, showing that they are 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲-𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁. 💡 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂: As you reflect on your hiring process, are you asking questions that reveal these deeper qualities, or are you still focused on checking boxes?
