Successful land developers know how to manage risks especially those associated with the land itself. Unknown site characteristics, including those not readily visible, can quickly lead to construction cost escalation, schedule delays, and project failures that lead to conflict and litigation. It is imperative to identify at least these possible conditions that lead to construction cost overruns: 1. Shallow rock 2. Unsuitable “borrow” soils 3. Light-weight, organic, plastic clay, or moisture-sensitive soils 4. Undocumented filled areas 5. Shallow groundwater #construction #engineering #engineer #northcarolina #charlottenc #aboveandbeyond #geotechnicalengineering #investigation

If road subgrade soils are light-weight or subject to moisture damage over time, our most discerning and sophisticated clients will choose a cement-stabilized base for asphalt pavements. Typically, a portion of the native soil, aggregate, and Portland cement are mixed together and compacted in place. This forms an extremely hard, long-lasting base for the asphalt layers making the road durable for years to come and well worth the additional expense, compared to the potential cost of future claims! #construction #engineering #engineer #northcarolina #charlottenc #aboveandbeyond

One of the easiest and most cost-effective methods of ensuring high quality engineered fill on a land development project during hot, dry weather is to ensure that the moisture content of a soil is maintained just wet of optimum. Placing the soil under a hot sun or windy conditions will dry a soil back quickly. If not monitored routinely, any soils placed dry of optimum will absorb moisture from future precipitation, resulting in failed structural pads, roads, and utilities. Employing water trucks and the efficient use of borrow pits will reap huge rewards! #construction #engineering #engineer #northcarolina #charlottenc #aboveandbeyond #dryweather

One of the easiest ways to control the quality of fill soils used on a land development project is to purchase “Select Fill” from a nearby quarry. This is not always feasible for large projects requiring mass grading of the natural soils. However, when the site soil quality is questionable or Select Fill is needed for bedding pipe or preparing structural pads, the need to import these materials to a site should be determined early in the development process. A local geotechnical engineering firm can assess the build site and also facilitate the identification of quarry materials meeting required properties and their location, if needed. The next time you see a piece of land under construction, or are visiting a new development, thank the countless men and women who make this possible! #construction #engineering #engineer #northcarolina #charlottenc #aboveandbeyond

In South Carolina, there are about 500 structurally deficient bridges, an improvement from 781 in 2017. South Carolina has worked its way through repairing about half of its deficient bridges, with a goal of completion in about another 5 years. Because the roadway over a bridge constitutes most of the wear and tear, a key part of making repair dollars stretch is to understand the road surface conditions, including the strength of the concrete bridge deck. That’s where BOYLE comes into the picture. BOYLE helps the Project Team through testing of core specimens retrieved from each deck so that the Engineer can assess which decks are priority for repair, and what repair schemes are best. We play a small, but critical part, in helping maintain safe bridges for all of us! #construction #engineering #engineer #northcarolina #charlottenc #aboveandbeyond
