I’m excited to share the amazing experience we had at the GIS Annual Conference at the end of September. We are incredibly proud to announce that our chapter (Gamma Iota Sigma -Rho Chapter) was named a Distinguished Chapter for the 2023-2024 academic year, which gave us the opportunity to competing for the prestigious Bowers Award. As part of the Bowers Award team alongside Zack Middleton, Riley E. and Mea Picone I’m especially proud to share that we competed for the first time and secured 2nd place out of seven chapters across the U.S. A huge thank you to David Marlett, PhD, CPCU , Wendy Deng and Dillon Waschenbach for their guidance and support. We also received Chapter Achievement Awards for our work in Community Service, Diversity & Inclusion, and Public Relations. To top it off, we earned the Most Improved Chapter Award—a testament to how far we’ve come! A huge congratulations to our faculty advisor, Wendy Deng for being recognized as Faculty Advisor of the Year! Lastly, a big thank you to Jazmin A. Jones and Gamma Iota Sigma for implementing impactful changes for international students, making the conference even more inclusive. #GammaIotaSigma #BowersAward #DistinguishedChapter #CommunityService #DiversityAndInclusion #MostImproved #ProfessionalDevelopment #InternationalStudents #Grateful

David Marlett, PhD, CPCU and Jamie Parson set up tables on the 3rd floor at Plemmons Student Union, helping community members with insurance-related questions. They are actively listening to concerns, and guiding individuals on how to get the necessary resources or support for their insurance needs. Appalachian State University has set up a Disaster Relief Resources page to share information about campus resources: https://lnkd.in/eUUM6a32

A Very Productive Week at the Brantley Risk & Insurance Center, last week was eventful and rewarding for the Brantley Center. Jamie Parson, David Marlett, PhD, CPCU Marlett and Lorilee Medders presented at the 2024 NAIC Annual Conference. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is the U.S. standard-setting and regulatory organization, governed by insurance regulators from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories. Austin Eggers accompanied four students to IIANC's InsurEXPO (Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina). This experiential learning trip provided the students with access to valuable learning sessions and networking opportunities. The conference, which combines academic sessions with professional networking, is designed to enrich students' classroom experiences and help them secure future jobs and internships. Emma Goodson, Cecelia Cagle, Zeke Putnam and Connor Hall Dillon Waschenbach and two students attended the Southeastern RIMS Conference (Risk & Insurance Management Society). This annual educational event invites a select number of universities, including App State, known for their excellence in risk and insurance programs. The attendees were exposed to the latest trends in strategic, hazard, operational, and financial risk management. Robert Dargan and Anthony Lenardi

On Thursday, Jon Humphreys, Managing Director of Amwins Global Risks visited the Brantley Center of Appalachian State University on his way to the WSIA (Wholesale & Specialty Insurance Association) Conference in San Diego. Jon presented to the Insurance Company Operations class on Lloyds and the London Insurance Marketplace. He addressed the history and importance of the Lloyds and spent some time going over how brokers and underwriters navigate this historic and important market. Jon also had the opportunity to meet with some RMI seniors and share his insights on the industry. Thank you Joe Hutelmyer TRS for being a wonderful host.
