We’re back with another review from #TeamBreef’s #BookClub. Every quarter we meet to discuss a book related to a topic on business, professional or personal development. Last month we read a team favorite, 'How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen' by David Brooks. The book provided detailed accounts of experiences from Brooks and others, highlighting key insights into how to see and know others truly. Below are a few of our favorite takeaways: 1. Build a team of illuminators. Brooks separates two main categories of people: diminishers and illuminators. Illuminators are curious, receptive and generous — and most importantly want to know others deeply. Illuminators shine a light on the strengths of those around them, making them feel respected, cared for and appreciated. 2. There’s power in accompaniment. Sometimes, being present with someone is all they need to feel seen. Accompanying someone means being available, patient and willful. 3. The art of good conversation is one worth mastering. The power of good, intentional conversation is unmatched. This means not only listening actively but listening loudly: inviting the person you’re speaking to to express themselves freely.

Did you know #TeamBreef has a #BookClub? Every quarter we meet to discuss a particular book related to a topic on business or professional development. Our first book of 2024 was a founder favorite, ‘Working Backwards: Insights, Stories, and Secrets from Inside Amazon’ by Colin Bryar + Bill Carr. It provides a detailed look into the early days of Amazon: their approach to culture, leadership and best practices. Below are a few of our favorite takeaways: 1. ‘Crisp Document, Messy Meeting’: An internal philosophy that means prep well and present pre-reads, but allow meetings to be flexible enough to encourage new ideas. Unsuccessful meetings are those that focus too much on process vs. outcome. 2. ‘Pitch’ the Concept: Amazon employees are encouraged to focus on the ideal end-state of a new concept by first presenting leadership with a ‘press release.’ If an idea or feature is strong enough to be condensed into a clear vision, everything else can be solved by ‘working backwards.’ 3. Customer First + Always: Amazon views customers as stakeholders — helping to dictate the company’s decision-making. They prioritize customer experience above all. Anyone who is an Amazon customer knows and values this.
