It takes a lot of power to keep a facility like Skokie Park District's Weber Leisure Center running. We spent a few days shooting footage of Robert Love and his installation team getting the ball rolling on the facility’s exciting new solar upgrade. So cool to witness what goes on behind the scenes of a project like this.

“Speak softly and carry a big stick” applies just as well to video production as it does to politics. Getting a high-angle, bird’s-eye view of the action doesn’t always require a drone or a scissor lift. As Spencer shows here—on location at Love Energy’s solar install for Skokie Park District—sometimes all you need is a telescoping rod to get the shot you need.

The Skatium Ice Arena is the crown jewel of Skokie Park District's Weber Leisure Center, hosting hockey leagues, ice shows, and community skating year-round. They are also a prime beneficiary of the center’s solar upgrade. We were on-site recently to capture Robert Love and his crew loading in the panels and peripherals that will help keep the ice available for years to come.

When documenting a project, what can you do to get your audience invested in the story you are telling? Point-of-view (POV) shots are an invaluable tool for visual storytelling, pulling viewers into the story and adding a layer of empathy. By setting up a GoPro on the frame of this forklift, Spencer puts the audience in the driver’s seat as the Love Energy crew moves pallets of equipment for their solar install at the Skokie Park District Weber Leisure Center.

Brella was among 39 businesses honored last week by the Evanston Legacy Business Alliance at a City of Evanston-sponsored reception at the Evanston History Center. Brella Co-founder Bernadette Burke enjoyed the rarefied air alongside the owners of landmark Evanston institutions like Hecky’s Barbecue, Vogue Fabrics, and Comix Revolution. How do you create a sense of scale when shooting a corporate documentary? Playing with perspective can help. Spencer has chosen low angles for these shots of the Love Energy solar install for Skokie Park District. Doing this magnifies the size and weight of the equipment being moved around. This helps to convey to the audience the enormity of this undertaking.

Meaningful dialogue sets the foundation for strong #CompanyCulture. Our recent all-company meeting gave team members from all over the country a chance to speak safely and candidly with company leaders. This kind of direct access helps colleagues feel that their concerns and contributions are recognized, valued, and validated.

This year’s two-day, all-company meeting was an undeniable success. Developing and maintaining #CompanyCulture can be challenging for a remote-first organization like Brella, but bringing everyone together at our Evanston HQ gave us all a chance to reset, recharge, and realign with our company goals and values.
