SiE1: Veteran Dr. Kristin Barnes on Healing her PTSD Using Fascial Counterstrain Listen to first of The Counterstrain Movement podcast here: https://lnkd.in/gtU4wuQr Also available on Spotify, Apple, and Amazon. Before becoming a naturopathic doctor and acupuncturist, Dr. Kristin Barnes served as a naval aviator for 23 years. In this episode, she shares her journey with Fascial Counterstrain (FCS), a manual technique that releases inflammation in the fascia to promote healing and pain relief. Following a near-fatal bike accident, Dr. Barnes used Fascial Counterstrain to accelerate her recovery, impressing herself and her orthopedic surgeon. She also credits FCS as instrumental to her post-accident recovery from PTSD, enabling her to regain a healthy, high-quality life. Inspired by its impact, she now specializes in Fascial Counterstrain to help others heal. Dr. Barnes is passionate about supporting veterans and survivors of military sexual trauma. She discusses the physical and emotional challenges veterans face after service and the importance of rebuilding community. She believes Fascial Counterstrain is a powerful tool for healing the nervous system, especially for those with trauma and PTSD, and integrates it with other therapies such as acupuncture, nutrition, and botanical medicine. Dr. Barnes also touches on the potential of psychedelic medicine for treating post-traumatic stress and pain, and envisions a future where these healing techniques are widely accepted and covered by insurance.
About us
Traumatic stress is a real and present issue among our military and first responder communities. Our mission is to use Counterstrain (a physical medicine modality) for those experiencing trauma to cross the bridge from survivor to thriver. Too often, the very people who put their own safety on the line to serve their communities are under-supported in addressing the extreme experiences they face as a regular aspect of their work. We are dedicated to helping such individuals treat post-traumatic stress injuries so they can live healthy, fulfilled lives. Our goals are ambitious. Firstly, we work with veterans, active duty military, and first-responders to treat post-traumatic stress injuries using counterstrain. Secondly, we are on track to publish clinical trial studies showing the efficacy of counterstrain for post-traumatic stress symptoms with the goal of having counterstrain manual therapy added to the list of modalities approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for those who suffer from the effects of trauma in the line of duty. Thirdly, we are committed to disseminating information about Counterstrain to the medical community and (eventually) to subsidize training for care providers and manual therapists who want to learn and become certified counterstrain practitioners.

Are you looking for a high-impact volunteer opportunity with a visionary organization? Do you have a background in finance or accounting? The Bridge Back Project is looking for a Treasurer. Become part of our organization’s leadership team and provide invaluable input to our Board and Executive Director. While the time commitment for this volunteer position is small, the impact is mighty. You will be part of a small, passion-driven, collaborative, and generous team that is setting the stage for years of restoring health and hope for survivors of injury and trauma. The role of the Board Treasurer is to provide general oversight of the organization's finances, serve as a resource to the Executive Director, and provide informed guidance to the Board. Practically speaking, this means: - Reviewing the organization's financial statements (balance sheet, statement of activities, and annual IRS form 990) on a quarterly basis in conjunction with the Executive Director and bookkeeper prior to each board meeting where they are presented. - Acting as an additional layer of approval for expenditures over a certain threshold. - Reviewing and providing input on the annual budget as prepared by the Executive Director and the bookkeeper. - A good candidate will be familiar with, comfortable, and maybe even enjoy reviewing and interpreting financial statements and spreadsheets. For our small organization, the Board Treasurer serves as the third leg of a stool of financial accountability (the other two legs being the ED and bookkeeper), providing another check to ensure that financial statements are prepared correctly, that the organization is in compliance with state and federal law, and that the Board-approved budget is being adhered to. Reports to: Board of Directors Works with: Executive Director and Bookkeeper Estimated Time Commitment: 4-8 hours per quarter Required: - Finance, accounting, or bookkeeping background - Familiarity with inclusionary business practices (or commitment to learning) Desired: - Nonprofit or foundation leadership experience - Nonprofit Treasurer experience - Experience fundraising - Passionate about health, community wellness, and supporting individuals facing disproportionate rates of traumatic stress - Identifies as part of, or has experience working with, one the communities we serve - BIPOC, First Responders and Healthcare Frontline Workers, LGBTQIA+ individuals, or Veterans and Active Duty Military. Please submit your CV and a letter of interest to Theora(at)bridgeback(dot)org. In your letter of interest please share your connection to or passion for working with the Bridge Back Project. What lights you up and inspires you about our work?

First Responders dedicate their lives to helping their communities. Now it's our turn to give back. Whether they are recovering from life-altering physical injuries, decades of surviving ineffective healthcare systems, or the lasting mental toll of careers helping other people on their worst days, your donations empower us to show up for them when they need it most. The Bridge Back Project's Financial Assistance Program funds Fascial Counterstrain care for active and retired first responders to help them heal after experiencing severe injury and trauma. This year, we are working with Miho Urisaka, PT, DPT, OCS, a talented Fascial Counterstrain practitioner located in New York City to expand our Financial Assistance Program to eligible clients living in the New York area. Please reach out to a First Responder you know today and thank them for dedicating their lives to helping their neighbors and communities when they need it most. And then consider donating or buying raffle tickets to help us raise funds to bring our life-giving Financial Assistance Program to first responders and other eligible clients in the New York area. "The higher you go in your career the fewer people like you you see. That’s typically an indicator that places aren’t doing a good job with their support for people with diverse backgrounds. Not just recruitment, but retention strategies for those underrepresented people... It’s not intentionally exclusionary, but effectively creates some exclusionary practices.” - Brianna Cardenas DMSc, PA-C, ATC (she/her/ella) We’re celebrating #DisabilityPrideMonth by sharing our admiration for our clients, providers, and volunteers living with chronic illnesses and invisible disabilities. Not only do they inspire us with their resiliency and creativity, but they go above and beyond to advocate for their peers despite the daily challenges that come with living with chronic illness and disabilities. Check out our most recent blog article about living with chronic illness and invisible disabilities and how a disabled Physician Assistant - Brianna Cardenas, DMSc, PA-C, ATC (she/her/ella) - has benefitted from incorporating Counterstrain into her personal healthcare plan. After experiencing the profound benefits of Fascial Counterstrain, she has dedicated herself to becoming a certified practitioner, and is a passionate advocate for improving accessibility within the Counterstrain sector. #ChronicIllness #InvisibleDisabilities #DisabilityPride #EhlersDanlos #Counterstrain #fascialcounterstrain

One of our top priorities for 2024 has been investing in improved transparency and clarity both internally and externally. As a nonprofit, leading with transparency is the most straightforward way to build trust with clients, community partners, and supports. To that end, we’re proud to announce that earlier this year the Bridge Back Project earned a 2024 Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid GuideStar, which is their highest level of recognition for transparency.
