The Elk Fire in northern Wyoming has grown rapidly over the past week. It was caused by lightning on Sept. 27th and has now reached nearly 50,000 acres. Our Multi-Mission aircraft have been actively assisting with the firefighting efforts. Montana’s wildfire season isn't over yet. Despite cooler temperatures rolling in, 57 wildfires still remain active across the state. During the 2024 Fire Season, reports show that 2,060+ fires have burned over 387k acres in Montana. ▶️▶️ While much of the media focus on wildfires has faded, the danger is still very real. Wildland firefighters continue to risk their lives daily to protect their communities, and our team remains dedicated to providing them with critical aerial support on these fires. Aerial Firefighting fact of the day: The ATGS (Air Tactical Group Supervisor) sits onboard the air attack aircraft and manages the airspace over a fire. They coordinate aerial firefighting operations and are the link between the ground firefighters and aircraft. It’s an intense role and mandates extreme focus, tactical awareness, and strong communication skills. Our role as the operator is to provide the most effective aircraft for the mission. The Pilatus Aircraft Ltd PC-12 is one of the most renouned single engine turboprop aircraft in the world, known for its safety, reliability, and airspeed. Earlier this month, our Super Scooper teams helped fight the Williams Mine Fire in Oregon, scooping out of the Columbia River. Scoopers are designed to fill their tanks with 1,412 gallons of water in just 10-12 seconds from nearby lakes or rivers, making rapid, repeated drops possible without the need to return to base. This capability allows them to effectively support ground crews by delivering continuous water drops, helping to keep the fire under control.
