Mom | Together with Families | Just Help

Today was our first ever group therapy session under the guidance of Jennifer Riapos, LCSW As I took my place in the circle amongst our parents, I laid bare my own trauma, fears, hurts, and hangups. We were all in tears letting out what we try so eloquently to hold in. Jennifer, your prowess as a counselor is unparalleled; you effortlessly endeared yourself to each of us with your insights and support. We all love you already. Thank you to the Annie E. Casey Foundation for funding our pilot. Thank you for allowing us to experiment with our families what works best. In that sacred space, I made a pivotal realization as a leader: the choice between perpetuating a facade of having it all together or embracing authenticity and vulnerability. I've opted for the latter, recognizing that my experience with trauma, mistakes, hangups, and setbacks is not a source of shame but rather a place of connection and empowerment. I hope we can create an organization where transparency reigns, where the executive director sits alongside program participants, openly sharing their struggles and hurts and hangups in group therapy sessions. We are all interconnected; no hierarchy delineates our capacity for both extraordinary goodness and profound darkness. I acknowledge the luck that has graced my path and embrace the responsibility it entails. For whom much is given much is expected. This is not a job for me. We are creating what our parents need, and what I need, maybe what we all need, a place where we can be honest and 100% transparent, a place of healing and love. I am so grateful I get to know and love our parents and so grateful I get to be on a journey of healing with them. #healing #vulnerability #love #therapy #justhelp #familywellbeing #childwelfare
