Reflecting on amazing #ClimateWeekNYC… my highlights: ➡️ Celebrating women leaders in energy alongside incredible partners energyRe, National Grid and Women of Renewable Industries and Sustainable Energy (WRISE). I was proud of how this event came together and left feeling energized and empowered by the candid, inspiring stories our panelists shared. ➡️ Bringing British clean energy champions like Octopus Energy and US renewables investors together to hear from Energy Secretary Ed Miliband about the UK’s clean power mission. I was inspired by the Secretary’s vision for how the energy transition and economic growth can go hand-in-hand. As he put it, we’re in the business of better lives. ➡️ Marking the exciting growth of UK clean energy companies, from Drax Group launching their new BECCS business Elimini to Kraken announcing their first US client. Fittingly for the “It’s time” theme of this year’s Climate Week, I’m impressed by the people and companies seizing this moment to tackle climate change.

Electric aviation - an exciting greener future. When British Defence Staff based in the USA were offered access to a ground-breaking no emissions aircraft, they jumped at the chance. Vermont-based BETA Technologies has developed Alia, an electric aircraft transforming medical, logisitics and defence capabilities, and invited our defence experts to take a look at the world of possibilities it opens up. “It was a privilege for the team to be hosted by BETA and assess their fully electric aircraft and production facility” says Strategic Command’s Stu Johnson. “The Alia platform - with its conventional and vertical take-off and landing capability - has the potential to be a game-changer for defence utility.” The skies, it seems, are not the limit! The UK is committed to supporting reaching Net Zero by 2050.

One of the best things about my job is the diversity of issues I get to deal with. Yesterday was a prime example: restoration of salt marshes and historic buildings in the morning, then enzymes and mRNA vaccines in the afternoon. In the morning, I joined National Trust for Scotland Chief Executive Philip Long and Director of Public Engagement and Research Michael Terwey for a visit to several sites near Ipswich MA operated by The Trustees of Reservations. At the Crane Estate, we learned about the efforts the Trustees were making to preserve their salt marshes in the face of threats from climate change, and find energy efficient ways to heat and protect their historic buildings. We then visited Appleton farm, which was established in 1638 and is one of the oldest continually operating farms in the country. There we learned about their efforts to promote regenerative farming and the role that public art can play in attracting visitors to the farm and telling a story about the relationship with the landscape. There were so many parallels between the work that National Trust for Scotland and the Trustees do - I hope that this will be the first of many dialogues. In the afternoon, I visited the New England Biolabs HQ in Ipswich. I had visited their new site at Milton Park (Oxfordshire) a few weeks before I left the UK so was really interested to hear more about their operations and get their perspective on the life sciences industry in the UK. It was fascinating to learn more about the history and culture of the company, and hear about some of the research that is taking place. I left hugely jealous of the amazing campus New England Biolabs has in Ipswich (although no complaints about the British Consulate-General Boston digs in Cambridge).
