A forgotten USB pen drive, and videos, built a company that’s worth $7.52 billion today. Here’s the story of how Dropbox came to be. In late 2006, Drew Houston, the co-founder of Dropbox but then a fresh computer science graduate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was taking a bus from Boston to New York. And as he started work on his laptop, he realized he had forgotten his USB pen drive at home. This motivated him to build a remote storage solution people can access online anytime and anywhere. And that led to the birth of Dropbox. Soon, it caught the attention of Y Combinator, helping Drew secure a seed funding of $1.2 million from Sequoia Capital in 2007 and officially launching Dropbox in 2008. But their meteoric rise came from a now famous screencast software demo video Drew made to show the working of Dropbox in its earlier stages. Using this video, Drew, along with his co-founder Arash Ferdowsi, expanded their waiting list of 5000 people to more than 200,000 sign-ups in a span of 10 days. Now, 16 years later, Dropbox is a key player in the file sharing software industry - Occupying 18.61% of the market in 2023, as per Statista - Gaining more than 700 million registered users - Generating $2.5 billion in annual revenue as of 2023 - Achieving a valuation of $7.52 billion What are your thoughts on Dropbox's amazing origin story? Do let us know in the comments. In the meantime, here’s one of their more recent videos that uses a combination of screencast and 3D animation to explain the USP of Dropbox.

Have you seen Honda’s Emmy-nominated stop-motion commercial? Honda has always been ahead of its time with their creative videos. Remember “Cog” from about 15 years ago? This hand-drawn masterpiece was the result of months of hard work by dozens of artists, animators, and illustrators. These examples showcase Honda’s commitment to pushing boundaries and setting new standards in visual storytelling. While not every company needs to invest in such elaborate productions, there’s a valuable lesson here: staying innovative and reflecting on progress can help build trust and capture attention. How do you keep your brand’s message fresh and engaging?

Transforming B2B Video Marketing with Animated Explainer Videos

Your SaaS marketing budget can’t revolve solely around lead gen! Sure, generating leads is crucial for driving new users, but allocating more than half of your budget to lead generation isn’t a sustainable strategy. Take SPONSORIUM, for instance. When they needed to market their sponsorship management software and convert potential leads into loyal customers, they realized something needed to change. Enter animated explainer videos. SPONSORIUM was impressed by how animation could clearly showcase the practical benefits of their SaaS while simplifying its complexity. They wondered if this approach could work for their cloud-based software. Collaborating with Marc Fisher, Sponsorium’s Head of Business Development in North America at the time, we crafted an animated explainer video that transformed a technical presentation into a compelling story. The video walked potential users through the software’s capabilities, making them feel like they were already using it. The results? SPONSORIUM not only attracted more highly-qualified leads but also extended the value of their investment. The video’s design allowed them to create shorter segments for online ads, strengthening their lead generation strategy for the future. Check out the animated explainer video that helped SPONSORIUM’s software stand out in a crowded market.
