  • Mining plays a significant role in shaping the landscapes around us. As coal is extracted from the earth, the physical environment can change dramatically.  Open-pit and underground mining operations create new terrains, from deep pits to expansive tunnels. Over time, however, mines are reclaimed and restored to support local ecosystems. Land can be rehabilitated and repurposed for future use, whether it’s for agriculture, recreation, or wildlife habitats.  Mining not only helps power the world, but also transforms and reshapes the land responsibly.  #MiningImpact

  • We've previously highlighted some of the key figures in Utah's coal mining history, but today we want to turn our focus to the land itself. In 1883, the construction of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad drastically altered the landscape of the Price River region. As the railroad expanded its route from Denver to Salt Lake City, coal was discovered along the way, sparking rapid development in the area. By 1894, the Utah Territory Legislature carved out the northern part of Emery County (where we are located) to create Carbon County, named after the element carbon in recognition of its industrial significance. The discovery of coal and the growth of mining operations brought both economic prosperity and a diverse population, transforming Carbon County into one of the most ethnically rich regions in Utah. #MiningHistory
