BSR Consumer Sectors Director Cliodhnagh Conlon shares reflections from her time in Mumbai with entrepreneurs who are embracing the just transition and the future of circular fashion. #justtransition #sustainablebusiness #retail #sustainablefashion

Last week, I had a unique opportunity to visit Mumbai to moderate a discussion on Just Transition in fashion and textiles at the launch of H&M Foundation’s new round of the Global Change Award. It was immense privilege to chat with 3 fascinating entrepreneurs who are pioneering organizational models that embody a just transition: 💫 Indumathi, a trailblazing waste entrepreneur, who has gone from jobs in garment production and waste picking to now employing 88 workers in the Dry Waste Collection Center that she runs. 💫Nalini Shekar, Co-founder of Hasiru Dala, who has done amazing work to integrate waste pickers into solid waste management, and more recently into fashion value chains, and build agency for them to represent themselves. 💫 Anish Malpani whose social enterprise "Without" by Ashaya turns "impossible-to-recycle" plastics into sunglasses, while creating social inclusion for waste pickers. Working with companies at the global level on sustainability, I’m often frustrated at the preoccupation with measurement, data and constantly having to make the business case for sustainability. It was thus so refreshing to learn from 3 inspirational organisations that are concentrating on doing – and making circularity with social impact a reality. These powerful examples and visiting the talented teams from I was a Sari | Certified B Corp and ANIMEDH CHARITABLE TRUST (ACT), felt like witnessing a prototype of a fashion and textiles industry that we could all be proud of. As someone who's been exploring how fashion’s green transition may evolve and how we could make it just, fair and inclusive, since 2019 (via BSR’s Keeping Workers in the Loop), I'm so glad that H&M Foundation’s new strategy is guided by Just Transition in its mission to decarbonize fashion. I’m grateful to Maria Bystedt, Sophia Halliday and all the Foundation team for the opportunity to participate and meet inspired and passionate changemakers from across the globe – thank you! On a personal note, I was thrilled to have my mum, Marie O'Connor accompany me on this business trip, in a role-reversal from my teens. She’s had to listen to so much on sustainability from me over the years, it was a real joy to visit India together and for her to witness some of this first-hand. #globalchangeaward #fashioninnovation

How can Chief Sustainability Officers (CSOs) steer down more ambitious paths for sustainability leadership? https://lnkd.in/efjBaxFy Drawing on interviews with more than 30 CSOs, BSR’s recent report: “The CSO at a Crossroads: Three Paths Forward for Sustainability Leaders” argues that now is a crucial moment to reaffirm an ambitious vision for the CSO role. After a period where CSOs focused (understandably) on reactivity and regulation, it is time to recognize the urgency and scale of global challenges and their implications for business. Report co-authors Laura Gitman and David S. Korngold offer seven ways for sustainability leaders to reassert their commitment to transforming companies, economies, and societies. BSR plans to use these preliminary ideas as a starting point to engage members in the coming months, and we welcome your feedback. "People will look to companies and employers, no matter the outcome, to help steady the ship. Whether companies are seeking that role or not, they need to be prepared," shares Jennifer Stark, co-director of BSR's Center for Business and Social Justice. Executive Editor at TriplePundit, Mary Mazzoni explores how U.S. business leaders are making their voices heard ahead of next week's U.S. presidential election, and offers ideas on where to start for those looking to get involved: https://lnkd.in/gVqbRNvh. #externalaffairs #sustainablebusiness #publicaffairs #DEI

"We went into this really expecting the narrative to align with what we were reading externally…We were expecting to really give them a place to vent. What we found was an incredibly pragmatic and embracing attitude of ‘We've won. We have institutionalized this. And yet, while that may not make it as much fun, we have to do this to be able to have the impact that we want to have.’ I think sustainability professionals are nothing if not pragmatic and creative about how to drive solutions." BSR Chief Impact Officer Laura Gitman chats with Richard Howitt, host of the podcast Frankly Speaking, about the future of sustainability leadership within companies and BSR’s latest report: The CSO at a Crossroads: Three Paths Forward for Sustainability Leaders. As the term “Adequate Wage” emerges across several EU legislations and the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) first ever guidance on Living Wage, explore how it compares to existing wage regulations and how companies can prepare for upcoming CSRD requirements. https://lnkd.in/dfzgvbfa There has been widespread confusion on how Adequate Wage compares to Living Wage and Minimum Wage. Understanding the Adequate Wage for a country or region is dependent on each location’s context, and for companies to close any pay gaps to meet regulations like the CSRD, they will need to conduct a gap analysis for Minimum Wage, Adequate Wages and Living Wages. BSR Associate Director, Consumer Sectors and Human Rights Emma Giloth and BSR Associate, Consumer Sectors Carolina Dominguez unpack the differences in wage terminology and provide practical guidance for businesses to conduct a wage gap analysis. BSR has worked with dozens of companies for twenty years to conduct Living Wage gap analyses and advance their Living Wage programs. We have seen more change in the past 5 years than in the entire history of just and sustainable business. So, what does this mean for the Chief Sustainability Officer?    Last week, Chief Sustainability Officers (CSOs) and senior leaders joined BSR and ChangeNOW to share their perspectives and discuss current challenges, from the US elections and economic uncertainty to the evolving regulatory landscape.   Key takeaways from an engaging discussion in Paris:   - There is a new set of inconvenient truths—from climate to human rights, to social justice—that have to be addressed if CSOs are to make good on their commitments. - Regulations have raised the ceiling, but ambition has gone down. Nobody complies their way to innovation. CSOs can often end up overly focused on reporting, which isn’t the objective. Integrating ambitious goals and strategic foresight into strategy has become more important than ever. - Company boards have to push the sustainablity agenda. Multi-stakeholder advisory groups can help ensure feedback is fully integrated into corporate strategy. - The role of the CSO is evolving in dramatic ways. 10 years ago, sustainability was related to advocacy, now CSOs are engaging with financial stakeholders, and shaping how a company’s extra-financial performance is disclosed and perceived. We have seen the role move from an isolated outpost to a structured function central to strategy, which needs increasing support from the CEO and CFO.    Thank you to our panelists: Aron Cramer, Elisa Niemtzow, Iris Maria Alexis Van der Veken, Veronique Toully, Kevin Tayebaly, and to Moët Hennessy for generously hosting the event. For more insight on the evolving role of the CSO, check out BSR’s latest report: https://lnkd.in/eMSexCbe   #CSO #businesstransformation #sustainablebusiness Constance Flachaire, Christine Diamente, Hugh Brown, Lara Birkes, Camille Barrier, Suruthi Ramesh Kumar, Paul Holdredge, Asako N.

Just Transition | Climate Justice | Climate & Human Rights | Climate and People Manager at BSR (Business for Social Responsibility)

Looking back on the last month+ of conversations on just transition and climate justice, I realized that I often refer back to a few helpful guidance documents and opportunities, and so I wanted to share here for others as well: ➰ Integrating siloes: Many are struggling with integrating siloes in the organization to address just transition - leveraging relevant expertise across human rights, climate, supply chain and human resources colleagues and understanding key issues to integrate into day-to-day decision-making. At BSR, we have developed the Just Transition Learning Lab to facilitate peer learning and a guided discussion on how to do this. See more here: https://lnkd.in/dTU3MF6X 🎯 Just transition planning: This is a challenging new step many companies are facing - and many have found the BSR Just Transition Planning Process Toolkit very helpful to guide their internal process: https://lnkd.in/d4_Fg-CJ 🙋 Meaningful stakeholder engagement and co-creation: Just transition and climate justice requires meaningful, proactive and ongoing engagement with relevant stakeholders - which is also now a requirement of the CSDDD. The following guidance provides some insight into how to do this: Co-creating Climate Justice Interventions between Business and Communities: https://lnkd.in/dg4nMVpk Stakeholder Engagement in the Transition Context: Guidance for Practitioners: https://lnkd.in/dGEi43gy 📇 Lastly, I will share the Just Transition Resource Platform developed by BSR, the We Mean Business Coalition and The B Team as the Platform provides a step-by-step approach on just transition action broadly for companies across sectors, and compiles resources, frameworks, and recommendations from leading organizations on how to do so: https://lnkd.in/embWdXK7 Thanks to everyone who has had an active role in developing this guidance! PhD | Corporate Sustainability Leader | Nature & Biodiversity | Climate & Net Zero | Labor & Human Rights | Partnerships & Collaboration

One of the things I think everyone at #COP16 can agree on is that we need more finance - and now - for nature. One of the existing avenues for companies is investment in high-integrity carbon credits that support climate, nature and people. Are you in Cali? Join me alongside Emergent , host of the LEAF Coaltion, and voices from both Indegenous People and corporates to hear about how companies can navigate the tumultuous VCM with integrity in both the short- and long-terms. 📆 Wednesday, 30/Oct ⏰ 15:00 - 15:45 📍 Place Quebec, Nature & Finance Hub
