The average basketball fan or viewer often doesn’t fully grasp the level of skill and ability required to be an NBA professional. Basketball, being a game many play casually, creates the illusion that the barrier to entry at the highest levels is easier than it truly is. The gap between an NBA player and a recreational player is akin to the gap between a world-renowned doctor and someone casually playing the game Operation. This lack of understanding of the different levels leads to players who aren’t yet NBA caliber being marketed as such on social media by those who don’t comprehend the true demands of the game. As a result, many players make the jump to the NBA before they are ready and once they arrive, both viewers and the players themselves quickly realize the vast gap in skill. As commonly said by others in the basketball community, professional sports is the ULTIMATE meritocracy. Talent and ability will always reveal themselves, whether one likes it or not. Promoting players as NBA caliber before they are ready only harms the athlete, and these actions are often driven by personal motives rather than the wellbeing of the player. What makes this issue worse is that it seems as though very important basketball decisions are currently being made by multiple organizations based on factors other than merit. In the past, players had to prove they were PROS through PROduction at lower levels before rising to the apex of the sport. Nowadays, it seems as though potential & popularity takes precedence over on-court production when that shouldn’t be the case.

In capitalist America, money is often seen as the ultimate goal, overshadowing personal development, growth, education, morality, and other qualities that contribute to being a well-rounded, high-character human being. In the basketball world, this emphasis on financial success creates challenges for coaches as many young athletes and those around them view substantial monetary compensation as the ultimate achievement in life. As a player who believes they have already reached the pinnacle of American success at 16, 17, or 18 years of age, what more can a coach teach you? How can a coach effectively lead and instruct if, by American standards, you are already considered a highly successful individual? This situation highlights the need for the inner circles around players, including family members & friends, to emphasize the importance of building character traits such as resilience, coachability, adaptability, and a continuous desire to learn, while also teaching players to respect the elders who can guide them towards becoming more impactful human beings. This new era of athlete compensation is not wrong, as players deserve a share of the revenue they have been generating for years with their talents. However, it is equally important to supply our athletes with the understanding that the ball will stop bouncing one day. Developing the previously mentioned character traits can allow them to continue to be impactful individuals even after their playing careers are over.
