Longitudinal Cohort studies are difficult and costly but provide insights that other study designs may fail to reveal. The Health and Retirement Study took just over 10,000 individuals over age 50 and followed them from 2006 to 2021. This graph shows the clear, statistically significant correlation to how well they scored on their psychological resilience at the start of the study and their mortality over time. Those with the lowest resilience scores were at the highest risk of mortality by the end of the study...and there was a linear response based on their resilience score. Clearly, psychological resilience is not the cause of death but it is a buffer to reduce the impact of events that happen over time. The key question is - can you bolster your psychological resilience? I believe you can...and there is plenty of science to back this up. There are discreet skills and practices that can be embraced that will help you improve on your resilience. With all the talk about which food to eat...perhaps more talk should be on what skills do I need to develop as we age. Check out the online article: Zhang A, et al. BMJ Ment Health 2024;27:1–6. doi:10.1136/bmjment-2024-301064 #psychologicalresilience #resilience #health

According to an Aon Report the average cost of healthcare per employee will rise 9% in 2025. The plan cost per employee will top the $16,000 mark! The consequences of this trajectory (plan costs rose over 6% on average in 2024) include decisions on staffing models, plan designs, coverage decisions, and wellness programs to name a few. For example, outsourcing will become even more appealing as companies grapple with the total cost of employment. Self-insured employers may choose to further limit coverage for certain medications like GLP-1 agonist. More employees may choose a HDHP rather than pay a higher premium for a plan that they seldom actually use. There could be greater volatility in selection of TPAs and PBMs as employers seek lower costs. One unintended consequence could be the reduction in "discretionary" programs like wellness and wellbeing. As the total cost of care increases it is often the prevention programs that get eliminated. That would be a mistake. Prevention is a critical element of the solution to rising costs. The key question to ask is...do you have an effective prevention strategy and understand the role of culture, incentives, and human behavior? https://lnkd.in/eH_Q2gaZ

Spotting projection of others can be learned - but the most important ability is to spot when you are projecting onto others! We are often blind to our own shortcomings and flaws but can easily spot them in others. This makes it easy to attribute to others what is really inside ourselves. As a leader we must work to become more self-aware and reflect on our own motivations. https://lnkd.in/g4TWVe4p

https://lnkd.in/gtVVSPkH This USA TODAY article highlights the trends found by Indeed that employers are shifting away from experience towards specific skills. In particular, "soft skills" are ones that will not show up on a resume yet are critical for team performance. The word, "soft" suggests they are easy compared to "hard". This unfortunate use of a word to describe the skills that are essential for high performing teams. Did you know that the terminology was created by the military in order to understand the training needed in relationship to machines? Hard skills were the routine skills needed to operate a machine...all other skills were put in the bucket of soft. Interesting how we have confused soft with "easy" and hard with "difficult". #leadership #softskills

Are you a go-getter? ✅ Good at math? ✅ You’re hired! 🤝 A growing share of employers are relaxing demands that #jobcandidates have a certain amount of #experience to be considered for openings, especially in high-wage positions that require college degrees, according to a new study by Indeed. Instead, companies are focusing more on the skills that job seekers bring to the table.  “We’re definitely seeing a trend toward skills-first (hiring) practices,” says Indeed economist Cory Stahle. Employers are asking themselves, “’Do I really need (someone with) five years of experience?’” Stahle says. Paul Davidson has details:

Little or no experience? You're hired! Why companies now opt for skills over experience

May 20th is World Bee day. If all the bees in the world were to die we would lose much of the plants and fruits that provide important nutrients. Blueberries and cherries, for example, rely on honeybees for up 90 percent of their pollination.     I did not think much of bees in my younger days. I saw them as a nuisance and a bit frightening in my youth. Yet, as I grew older and I learned more about the critical role that they play as nature's pollinator I have come to value and respect all that they do in this world. Isn't it funny how ignorance distorts our image of the value of another person, creature, and thing. The bees are a reminder of the reality that our society is comprised of millions of individuals who provide tremendous value and allow for our ecosystem to thrive. Each of us need all of us and all of us need each of us...I am grateful for the bees of this world…truly life’s pollinators. #worldbeeday
