Buchart Horn teamed with Modjeski & Masters to conduct an in-depth safety inspection of the Lehigh Tunnel on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. This vital tunnel, with its unique design and history, requires expert care and attention. The northbound tube, built in 1957, is 4,380’ long, while the southbound tube, added in 1991, stands out with its fully round shape, constructed using the New Austrian tunneling method. Buchart Horn’s role in this project includes inspecting the concrete portal faces and arches, reviewing the structural components of the portal buildings, as well as assisting with electrical inspections in both tunnels and buildings. A big shout-out to our dedicated team members who are making this project possible. Kyle McElwee, Rob Snyder, and Scott Stock have been leading the tunnel inspection efforts with their expertise, while Jeff Kiminski has been thoroughly inspecting the portal buildings. Ismeta Jovicevic has provided valuable support with electrical inspections throughout the site. The entire project is managed seamlessly under the leadership of Matt March.

Progress is back on track at the I-55 Northbound project near the Mississippi River crossing in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. After a prolonged delay in construction of the last abutment, the installation of beams between bent 4 and bent 5 can proceed. This process involves: 1️⃣ Site Preparation: Ensure the area around bent 4 and bent 5 is clear and safe for installation. 2️⃣ Observation: Verify that the last abutment is fully cured and meets structural specifications. 3️⃣ Beam Transportation: Carefully transport the beams to the site using cranes or other lifting equipment. 4️⃣ Alignment: Position the beams between bent 4 and bent 5, ensuring they are correctly aligned with the structural plans. 5️⃣ Connection: Securely connect the beams to the bents using appropriate fasteners and methods, following engineering guidelines. 6️⃣ Final Checks: Conduct thorough observations to ensure stability and safety before proceeding with any further construction activities. This structured approach guarantees the project integrates smoothly with the existing infrastructure.
