From our CEO: Wallets Speak Louder Than Words: The Truth Behind Consumer Behavior Over the past decade, I've learned a crucial lesson in the world of consumer behavior: what consumers say and what they do are usually worlds apart. This is why I view polling and surveying as anecdotal at best. Let me share an experience: I (James Dayton) once worked as the Creative Director on a large $500K+ 3-Video Campaign for a company that was strongly convinced that SUSTAINABILITY was their core value proposition. They believed this because their online audience was vocally passionate about it—every single day. Because I wanted to make sure that we would be creating content based on the BEST PERFORMING value proposition I asked the client if we could perform a matrix test to make sure that we were testing the most profitable message. When we conducted the Scientific Method Style Split Test with 25 different value propositions, sustainability landed DEAD LAST. Despite the noise, it wasn't the value proposition that actually drove purchases. This company had invested millions in becoming a sustainable business, and even though that is a noble action it simply was not what actually drove thier consumers to use them. Just because people are loud about a topic doesn’t mean they’re opening their wallets for it. When we started leaning into the top-performing messaging from the test, it dropped their Cost per Acquisition by $50. We then created a video campaign around their top-performing value propositions. The result? They celebrated their first $1 MILLION DOLLAR QUARTER, immediately followed by their first $1.5 MILLION DOLLAR QUARTER! That's why at Buck Wild Media we take a strong Data Driven Approach because businesses today don't have money to waste on gut level guesses on what the market wants. Runways are shorter than ever and it's imperative that companies get it right the first time. The takeaway? Polls and surveys rarely tell the full story. Wallets do. Consumer decisions are often made in a split second at a subconscious level. So, focus on testing wallets, not just words.
