Important Health Alert: The Dangers of Kratom
Millions of Americans are turning to kratom, an opioid-like herbal supplement, but mounting evidence highlights its serious dangers.
FDA Warning: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently issued a warning about a brand of kratom known as OPMS Black Liquid Kratom, following a tragic incident where a user lost their life after consuming it. This is not an isolated case—numerous reports of serious adverse events have been linked to this supplement.
What is Kratom? Kratom is derived from the dried leaves of a tropical evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. It contains a chemical called mitragynine, which interacts with some of the same brain receptors as opioids. Despite its natural origin, overdoses of mitragynine can be toxic to the liver and can even prove fatal.
The Risks: Serious Health Issues: The FDA has highlighted adverse effects associated with kratom use, including withdrawal symptoms, addiction, digestive issues, restless leg syndrome, skin problems, aggressive behavior, increased anxiety, lack of energy, and inability to focus.
Liver Toxicity & Seizures: Kratom overdoses can result in severe liver damage and seizures.
Substance Use Disorder: Regular use can lead to dependency and other serious health complications.
Kratom is largely unregulated, meaning it can be easily purchased online, in convenience stores, gas stations, and even bars. This accessibility contributes to the misconception that kratom is safe.
A Growing Concern: In 2021, about 1.7 million Americans aged 12 and older reported using kratom. However, the risks associated with its use continue to rise.
Stay Informed and Stay Safe: Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s safe. The FDA continues to warn consumers to avoid using kratom due to the potential for serious adverse health effects.
