  • Understanding legal requirements and changing regulations can reduce costly surprises for business owners – especially small business owners who already wear many hats. Daniel Collins, partner at Harter Secrest & Emery LLP, has expert advice that can go a long way in gaining a business edge and developing best practices. Representing many family-owned and other closely-held businesses in a wide variety of legal matters, he also serves clients in various mergers, acquisitions and bulk sales transactions. Join us virtually at 10 a.m. on Sept. 25 for our next 5 in 25 Virtual Learning Series session, where Daniel will highlight key areas that all owners/operators should be aware of in order to protect and grow their business. While this topic was selected with small businesses in mind, the knowledge will be helpful for organizations of all sizes.

  • Insider perspective on upcoming changes to New York State law. Insightful knowledge-sharing on leveraging the power of organic social media, realistically. And a briefing on current advocacy priorities for our Government Affairs team. Now that’s what we call a highly productive morning at our Small Business Industry Leaders Forum – as efficient and insightful as our small business owners need it. Thank you to Ashley Ranslow, New York State Director at the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), for hopping in the car before dawn to join us from the Capital Region. She shared essential information and context on Frequency in Pay lawsuits and what the recently enacted Freelance Isn’t Free act means, and who it applies to (it’s not just creatives, but any 1099 or independent contractor). Thank you to Drew Brown and Kate Scaduto of Visit Buffalo Niagara for the welcome reminder that social media is your opportunity to connect and share a direct look into the personality of your business. Have a plan, but don’t overthink the content you’re sharing, because people crave that authentic connection. And most of all, thank you to all the small business owners who started their day with us!

  • There are companies in Buffalo Niagara that are already supplying the semiconductor industry, but there are a lot more businesses in the region that could be suitable for the semiconductor supply chain – and might not even be aware of it. That’s where the Supply Chain Activation Network (SCAN), one of the components of the NY SMART I-Corridor Tech Hub funding, comes in. "We aren't just saying, 'We're going to be the place where every company wants to move to,'" BNP President & CEO Dottie Gallagher recently told The Buffalo News. "We're saying, 'Let's look at the companies that are here and build wealth for the people who are here.'" The University at Buffalo will manage SCAN, which intends to get to work this fall, to help identify opportunities in the semiconductor industry. The goal is to bring 200 more companies from across the Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse territory into the semiconductor supply chain by 2035, in addition to the 100 or so already participating. • We are honored to recognize Scott Bieler as our 2024 Industry Leader Award winner. As the president and CEO of West Herr Automotive Group, Scott leads the growth of the largest automotive group in New York State and one of the largest privately owned auto groups in the country. He also supports numerous charitable and community focused endeavors, including the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center Alliance Foundation, Visit Buffalo Niagara, the Greater Buffalo Racial Equity Roundtable and Daemen University. For playing such a vital role in the Buffalo Niagara region as both an economic and philanthropic engine, he will be presented the award at our Economic Development Summit on Sept. 26. "We are proud to honor Scott Bieler with this year's Industry Leader Award," says BNP President & CEO Dottie Gallagher. "His leadership not only drives the success of West Herr, but it also enriches the lives of countless people in the community. His dedication to Western New York as both a businessman and a humanitarian has set an incredibly high standard in our region."
