How can we accelerate momentum towards a #NaturePositive future? Earlier this month in #Davos the focus was on business and economics. But economics and nature are indivisible. We are inherently connected to nature, yet we've arrived at a pivotal moment of decision: either persist on the current path that harms nature and jeopardizes our future, or shift direction in a way that protects nature and transforms our economies. Our CEO, Eva Zabey joined industry experts Marco Lambertini, Harvey Locke and Dorothy Maseke ,CFIRM to discuss how to work together towards nature-positive outcomes and live within planetary boundaries. Special thanks to Becky Anderson for moderating a very insightful session. Creating a #NaturePositive world will require every industry to take action! To support organizations in identifying, assessing and reporting on their nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities, the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) has published new sector guidance to provide sector-specific considerations when applying the TNFD LEAP approach and disclosing sector-specific metrics in line with the TNFD recommendations. The guidance builds on existing industry standards and tools and complementary sector guidance Business for Nature developed alongside WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the World Economic Forum. "The release of this guidance marks a significant step forward in enabling businesses in specific sectors to assess and disclose their nature-related dependencies and impacts. This resource complements existing guidance for 14 sectors developed by Business for Nature, the World Economic Forum and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development that outlines the priority actions companies from these sectors should take to transform their business and meet the ambitions they have set out as part of a credible nature strategy." - Eva Zabey, CEO, Business for Nature. 🔗 Explore TNFD's sector guidance - https://lnkd.in/gJ-ArCfA #TNFD #NaturePositive #Guidance #WEF25 #Disclosure #LEAP

How can the financial services sector help contribute towards a #NaturePositive future? More than half of global GDP is estimated to be moderately or highly dependent on #Nature. Therefore, financial institutions that underestimate the value of nature are likely to expose themselves to significant risks and missed opportunities. To help secure a sustainable future, financial institutions must focus on the following priority actions and opportunities: 🌎 Build internal capacity to act on nature. 🌎 Develop financing policies, strategies and transition plans that favor nature. 🌎 Embed nature in risk management systems. 🌎 Develop robust nature-related reporting systems. 🌎 Engage with high nature-impact and high nature-risk businesses. Guidance developed by Planet Tracker in collaboration with Business for Nature, WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development and World Economic Forum, outlines the sector-specific actions the financial services sector should take to contribute towards a #NaturePositive future: https://lnkd.in/e8eFNSZ5 #NowForNature

Why is subsidy reform crucial to helping build a #NaturePositive economy? 🌱 Environmentally harmful subsidies (EHS) unintentionally contribute to air and water pollution, climate change, #BiodiversityLoss and land degradation, ultimately driving the destruction of #Ecosystems and #SpeciesExtinction. As of 2024, research by Doug Koplow and Ronald Steenblik has found that the world is spending at least $2.6 trillion a year on harmful subsidies, a significant increase since 2022. We’ve produced an addendum, reflecting on: 🌎 Target 18 of the Global Biodiveristy Framework, committing all signatory governments to identify, and then eliminate, phase out, or reform incentives and subsidies harmful to biodiversity by at least $500 billion per year by 2030. 🌎 New guidance that we’ve published outlining the steps governments should take to reform harmful subsidies. 🌎 The growing call from the private sector in favor of EHS reform, where there’s a significant opportunity to incentivize businesses to restore nature, tackle the climate crisis and prioritize initiatives that enable communities to thrive. 🌎 The increase in EHS globally, including the first-event quantification of subsidies to the mining and plastics sectors, estimated at $40 billion and $30 billion respectively. 🔗 Read more: https://ow.ly/GYHi50UuLtm

Which key global risks will be discussed at #Davos2025 this week? World Economic Forum's latest Global Risks Report sets the agenda for discussions at the Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos this week. It reveals a significant carryover of 2024’s key concerns and highlights some new shifts in risk perception. Environmental concerns featured heavily in last year’s report, and with 2024 severely impacted by extreme weather, its a similar outlook in both the 2-year and 10-year scenarios. In the latest World Economic Forum article, Mark Elsner writes on risks highlighted in the report, including: 🌎 Extreme weather events are the top risk of the next decade for all stakeholder groups. 🌎 Pollution is seen as a more pressing, shorter-term risk. 🌎 #BiodiversityLoss and ecosystem collapse are perceived as a greater risk in the long term. It's crucial that all parts of society - particularly governments and businesses - double down on efforts to accelerate the transition to a #NaturePositive, #NetZero and #Equitable economy. 🔗 Learn more: https://ow.ly/5Y0t50UH0UF

📢 Out now - new metals and mining sector guidance! How can the metals and mining sector help contribute towards a #NaturePositive future? 🌱 Metals account for 10% of global material extraction, and will play a key role in the scale-up of energy transition infrastructure and the electrification of the transport and mobility system. Whilst the sector depends on nature to function and grow, it also contributes to #NatureLoss. By taking these five priority actions, the mining and metals sector could unlock more than $430 billion of additional value by 2030: 🌎 Transform operations across the mine life cycle by avoiding, then reducing, land, pollution and emissions impacts, and restoring in line with the mitigation hierarchy. 🌎 Improve water stewardship by avoiding then reducing, water abstraction, use and pollution in mining operations and landscapes. 🌎 Expand circularity and source responsibly by embracing standards and transparency, engaging with suppliers and customers. 🌎 Restore and regenerate landscapes by supporting nature conservation and restoration with local communities. 🌎Transform policy systems and collaborate across sectors. To support this transition, World Economic Forum's ‘Nature Positive: Role of the Mining and Metals Sector’ report, developed in collaboration with Oliver Wyman, outlines the sector’s key impacts and dependencies on nature, and the priority actions corporate leaders can take to halt and reverse #NatureLoss. This report forms part of a package of sector action reports that we’ve already launched, in collaboration with World Economic Forum and the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development. 🔗 Read the overview and the report: https://lnkd.in/eA-r2thZ

New automotive sector guidance released today! 👇 How can the automotive sector play its part in halting and reversing #NatureLoss by 2030? The automotive sector depends on #Nature, but also impacts nature. Whilst 43 countries have collectively committed to accelerating the transition towards 100% zero-emissions vehicles, the automotive sector still contributes to #Biodiversity loss through pollution, water-use, land-use change and greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain. Therefore, it’s crucial that companies in the sector take priority actions to transform their businesses, namely through: 🌎 Avoiding and reducing impacts from operations, through improving water stewardship, avoiding and reducing pollution, strengthening biodiversity assessment, planning and management, and accelerating GHG emissions abatement. 🌎 Avoiding and reducing impacts from materials, through expanding circularity, innovating to avoid and reduce material waste across the value chain, engaging with suppliers and sourcing responsibly. 🌎 Transforming product offerings, through transitioning from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to battery electric vehicles (BEVs), expanding into new business models like mobility- or component-as-a-service models and influencing customer behaviour. 🌎 Conserving and restoring nature, through supporting nature conservation and restoration with Indigenous Peoples and local communities, and investing in innovative biodiversity financing mechanisms. 🌎 Driving cross-sector collaboration, through embracing standards and transparency, educating customers, supporting downstream networks, scaling up transition infrastructure and calling on governments to strengthen nature-related policy. To support this transition, the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Oliver Wyman, has produced a report including sector-specific guidance that businesses should take to ensure the sector helps contribute towards a #NaturePositive future. This report forms part of a package of sector action reports that we’ve already launched, in collaboration with World Economic Forum and the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development. #WEF #AM25 🔗 Read the overview and report: https://lnkd.in/eFpg8Qbj
