Our staff are "Exploring (their) Why" at this year's Principles and Practices (commonly referred to as PnP amongst Y folks) National Training at YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer, which is one of several required courses for them to receive their Team Leader Certification through YUSA. We are excited to see what new ideas and suggestions they will return with, that we can put into action at our Y!

About us
The Butler County Family YMCA was founded in 1886. Our Mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all has provided a positive foundation to thousands of people in Butler County for more than 130 years. The Butler County Family YMCA includes two branches: the Butler YMCA located in the city of Butler and Rose E. Schneider Family YMCA in Cranberry Township. In addition, the YMCA owns and operates ARMCO Park in Slippery Rock Township. Our pillars of Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility support our Mission through a variety of programs including preschool, youth/teen/family classes and programming; land and water exercise classes for all fitness levels; chronic disease management programs; and programs that directly help people meet basic needs. Examples include: our backpack program for school children which helps to feed children on weekends and holidays; and support groups that offer childcare for families of those addicted to heroin and opioids. We recognize that for communities to be successful, everyone should have an opportunity to be healthy, confident, connected and secure.

The employee of the month for August is Butler YMCA's very own Gordon Schmude! "Gordon is a loyal employee with a wide variety of skills. He always gives 110% each and every day. He has unmatched historical knowledge of the building and all its quirks. He is great with the kids in the hall, he makes jokes and keeps them laughing – they are always excited to see him. If you want something done, Gordon is the guy to go to! We are lucky to have an employee as dedicated as him." Gordon, your kindness, hard work, and fantastic attitude contributes so much to the culture of the Butler YMCA. We are so thankful for you and all the ways you serve our community!

After twenty-nine years of service to our community, Sandy Ihlenfeld is retiring as Executive Director of the Butler YMCA. From part-time instructor and personal trainer to an array of leadership roles, Sandy has done it all! Most significant of her professional accomplishments include traveling the world to instruct trainers through YUSA, finding financial balance for our organization, and building relationships that have led to collaborations, renovations, and positive change, all the while earning multiple undergraduate and graduate degrees and raising a family. She has been a pillar of our organization and an advocate for the Y in every area of her life. Sandy has climbed mountains, literally and figuratively, and many of you have been with her since the beginning, offering support and encouragement. We ask that you now join us in congratulating her on a job well done in making our Y a welcoming and inviting space for all. Sandy, you are one-of-a-kind, you are loved, and you’ve been one of the best in the biz! Thank you for leading us prayerfully and with faith, for being a true example of what it means to be dedicated and hard-working, and loving all of us at the Y like family!
