Governor Gavin Newsom has signed AB 1780 into law, effectively banning legacy and donor preferences in college admissions for private, nonprofit universities in California. The new law aims to level the playing field by ensuring that admissions are based on merit rather than family wealth or connections. Legacy preferences have already been banned in California’s public universities, and this law extends those standards to private institutions. The move comes after the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that limits race-based admissions, pushing lawmakers to ensure that wealth or family ties don’t influence who gets admitted to top schools. Private colleges in the state will now be required to submit annual reports proving compliance with this law. Advocates like Assemblyman Phil Ting emphasize that a student's hard work and qualifications should determine their admission, not the size of their family's donation. This is a significant step toward making higher education more accessible and equitable for all students. What do you think? Should more states follow California’s lead?
