About us

Children’s Advocacy Center for North Texas is a non-profit agency that coordinates the investigation and prosecution of severe child abuse cases (severe physical abuse, child sexual abuse, and witnesses to violence) for law enforcement and the Department of Family & Protective Services. We also work with the District Attorney’s Office and medical professionals to provide a full range of wraparound services. The Advocacy Center also provides family advocacy and counseling services to the children and their family members including food and clothing assistance; Back to School, and Christmas assistance; case updates and filing for Crime Victims Compensation and VINE; and evidence-based, trauma-informed individual counseling, group counseling, and play therapy - all completely free of charge to the family.

I can’t tell you how honored I am to be involved in this mission. Please watch this video and imagine the feeling of making an outcry of abuse. At the Children's Advocacy Center for North Texas we hope we have done everything possible to bring “safety” and “comfort” to something so hard.

POV: You are a client walking into the Lewisville office of Children’s Advocacy Center for North Texas. Here is what you would see! Our goal is to ensure every client walking into our doors feels confident that they will receive the best services. Before coming to the Advocacy Center, clients and their caregivers can feel overwhelmed, scared, or any combination of emotions after being brave enough to speak their truth. No matter what gender, age, or background, we want this center to feel like a safe space where justice and healing can begin.

  • Introducing our wonderful Grants Officer, Kate, for our Staff Spotlight! Kate just celebrated her 5 year anniversary with the Advocacy Center and we are lucky to have her! Q: What do you like most about your job? A: It's for the kids! Q: What motivates you in your personal and professional life? A: I get to talk to people, ask them for money and support, and feel good about it at the end of the day. Q: What activities do you do for fun? A: I read, work in my yard, watch/listen to the Texas Rangers baseball games, play with my dog (she's 17 this year), go out to listen to local music in Denton/DFW area, and hang out with friends and family. Q: Tell me a little about yourself and/or your family. A: I'm the fourth of five kids; both my parents are deceased, but they were married for 55 years. I was my dad’s primary caretaker for over 10 years, after my mother's death. I have a daughter who is a Forensic Autopsy Tech for the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office; she and her partner Jac live in Austin. I have six nieces and nephews (plus their spouses/partners), four great-nieces and great-nephews (my eldest great-niece is my birthday twin) and consider my ex-husband's family my own. I never wanted to go to college, but I have a BA, an MA, and a PhD in History. I've taught at seven universities, everything from the beginning of time (classical civilizations) to yesterday (20th/21st century Europe and the World), but my favorite right now is Asian Studies. Q: What is a silly or fun fact about you? A: I love to travel...Mostly that means going to see family (I have some family members in about 20 of the 50 states) but I've lived in Japan and traveled all around Japan, Okinawa, Korea (even gone into North Korea as the jeep driver took a short cut), Guam, China, and Hong Kong. I worked in London at a museum over a summer and lived there for a month while researching for my dissertation. I've traveled to England, Scotland, Wales, North Ireland, Ireland, Germany, Belgium, France, The Czech Republic, Hungary, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Slovakia, and Austria. Thank you for sharing, Kate! As our Grants Officer, Kate researches, reports, and applies for crucial grants needed for funding of our nonprofit. We couldn’t provide the services we do without her!

  • Walking into a Children’s Advocacy Center can be overwhelming, especially during or after a traumatic event. Our goal is to ensure that each child and their family members that walk through our doors understands they are in a safe place, and we are here to help. We value this feedback as we want clients to understand the process and feel heard during each step of their healing journey. • Our Assistant Director of Clinical Services, Kellie, provided a GREAT reminder for today – mental health IS health and should be treated just as importantly as physical health. Data from the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse has found that 88 percent of victims and survivors have experienced an impact on their mental health as a result of sexual abuse. This is why healing is such an important pillar of what we provide for children and their families that walk through our door. Here at Children’s Advocacy Center for North Texas, we provide evidence-based, trauma informed therapy at no cost to our clients. With regular sessions of a mental health professional teaching stress management techniques, building responsive relationships and strengthening life skills, we can help reduce the long-term effects of trauma.
