Thanks to groundbreaking federal approval, Medi-Cal will cover essential services for incarcerated people 90 days before their release starting in three counties – Inyo, Santa Clara, and Yuba – as of October 1. This nation-leading effort will improve health outcomes, advance equity, and reduce recidivism when individuals reenter California communities after incarceration. “These transformative services will have a lasting impact on people returning to their communities by ensuring they receive the care they need,” said DHCS Director Michelle Baass. “By providing access to vital health care services, this initiative helps people maintain their health during a critical time in their lives and reduces the likelihood of future emergency room visits or hospitalizations.” https://lnkd.in/ge9vRR-k The Justice-Involved Reentry Initiative is focused on ensuring Medi-Cal members have continuity of coverage and are supported to access key services to help them successfully return to their communities. Medi-Cal members who receive pre-release services in prison, jail, or a youth correctional facility will receive a comprehensive care transition plan to coordinate the medical, behavioral, and social services that will support them in the critical days and weeks following release.

State Medicaid Director Tyler Sadwith appeared on the Tradeoffs podcast to discuss contingency management, an evidence-based treatment that provides motivational incentives to treat individuals living with stimulant use disorder and support their path to recovery. “We needed to prove and demonstrate that this works, and it works well,” said Sadwith. California is the first state in the nation to use Medicaid money to fund contingency management. “We didn’t take that responsibility lightly. And I think we continue to feel the importance and the weight of getting this right,” said Sadwith. “We want to use this opportunity to prove to the public, to the field, to our federal partners, and to other states that this works, people get better, and there is a role for contingency management in Medicaid,” said Sadwith.
