Our mission is to sustainably manage the water resources of California.

About us

In 1956, the Legislature passed a bill creating DWR to plan, design, construct, and oversee the building of the nation's largest state-built water development and conveyance system. Today, DWR protects, conserves, develops, and manages much of California's water supply including the State Water Project which provides water for 27 million Californians and 750,000 acres of farmland Working with other agencies and the public, DWR develops strategic goals, and near-term and long-term actions to conserve, manage, develop, and sustain California's watersheds, water resources, and management systems. DWR also works to prevent and respond to floods, droughts, and catastrophic events that would threaten public safety, water resources and management systems, the environment, and property. Balancing the State's water needs with environmental protection remains a long-term challenge.

  • According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there is a 72 percent chance of a 6.7 or greater magnitude earthquake in the Bay Area by 2043, and a major earthquake centered in the Delta poses a significant threat to levees. The collapse of Delta levees could allow salt water to contaminate the State Water Project delivery system and jeopardize the water supply for 27 million Californians, leading to serious social and economic impacts. The Delta Conveyance Project would minimize this threat. For a closer look at the seismic risk to the State Water Project watch this episode in the Quick Question video series at https://lnkd.in/gfH9M-sW #California #DeltaConveyanceProject #Earthquake

  • The Delta Conveyance Project will protect against the expected effects of climate change and sea level rise, avoiding future shortages and maintaining water supply reliability. Failure to plan for the future by modernizing water conveyance infrastructure in the Delta will prove far more expensive in the long run. Water shortages and mandatory restrictions will impact our state and local economies.
