POWER UP CLEAN ENERGY! POWER DOWN DIRTY GAS! ☀🔥✊🏽 Last week, the Regenerate California Coalition led by the California Environmental Justice Alliance and Sierra Club hosted an Energy Justice Tour in Wilmington and Long Beach, CA. We brought staff and decision makers from energy agencies out of their offices and into the environmental justice neighborhoods influenced by their policies to see the impacts of dirty energy infrastructure and to connect with community members. We heard powerful stories from residents as we visited polluting gas-fired power plants including Harbor Generating Station, Alamitos Energy Center, and Haynes Generating Station. We showcased community renewables as a solution as we visited an affordable housing community that recently received rooftop solar funded by the SOMAH Program. We practiced resilience as we waited for over an hour among idling freight trucks for a train moving cargo from the port to pass - an inconvenience and air quality hazard that Wilmington residents live with every day. We reflected and left wishes of good health, joy, and justice for EJ communities in Wilmington and Long Beach. Thank you to community leaders and staff who led and joined the tour from Communities for a Better Environment, the Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE), the Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice (CCAEJ), Strategic Concepts in Organizing and Policy Education, and EMeRGE. Thank you to the agency staff and decision makers who joined us from the California Public Utilities Commission, California Energy Commission, California Natural Resources Agency and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
