All Californians should have access to the care they need, when they need it, at a price they can afford. Californians with low incomes often face greater barriers to care than those with higher incomes. Californians with Low Incomes provides data based on the 2022 California Health Interview Survey. Among the findings was the fact that twenty-three percent of Californians with lower incomes reported they did not have a usual source of care. Improving California's health care system, so it works for all Californians.
About us
The California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) is dedicated to advancing meaningful, measurable improvements in the way the health care delivery system provides care to the people of California, particularly those with low incomes and those whose needs are not well served by the status quo. We work to ensure that people have access to the care they need, when they need it, at a price they can afford. CHCF informs policymakers and industry leaders, invests in ideas and innovations, and connects with changemakers to create a more responsive, patient-centered health care system. This #PrimaryCareWeek, it is important that we continue to emphasize the importance of investing in #primarycare. This California study showed that greater investment in primary care among health plans was associated with better quality care and fewer hospital visits. Additionally, larger investments in primary care were associated with better quality, better patient experience, and fewer hospital and emergency room visits, as well as a lower total cost of care. California is making important advances with the efforts happening through the California Department of Health Care Access and Information Office of Health Care Affordability (OHCA). Let's continue to advance this important work! https://lnkd.in/gHH5y29m

California's Medi-Cal program takes a groundbreaking step towards inclusive healthcare policy through its Medi-Cal Member Advisory Committee (MMAC). This innovative initiative brings together 18 diverse Medi-Cal enrollees and caregivers to provide direct input to program managers at the California Department of Health Care Services. Everyday Impact Consulting facilitates and California Pan-Ethnic Health Network supports the MMAC. The MMAC, the first of its kind to consist exclusively of Medi-Cal enrollees, aims to improve policies and programs by incorporating firsthand experiences. Members represent various backgrounds, including undocumented immigrants, rural residents, and individuals with disabilities. “I can share what I’ve learned in my community, and now I have the opportunity to ask and learn how to navigate this Medi-Cal program,” said Sandra Garcia, a committee member who has served for more than 40 years as a health advocate and promotora for farmworkers. This collaborative approach not only enhances trust but also addresses critical issues such as access to care, benefits, and complaint processes, ultimately leading to a more responsive and effective Medi-Cal system. Data disaggregation: The key to understanding diverse health needs 🗝️ As our population becomes more diverse, the importance of disaggregated health data grows. Lumping Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) into one category often obscures crucial differences in health outcomes and needs. Recent research shows: • Filipino Americans have higher diabetes rates than Chinese Americans • 19% of Korean Americans report suicidal thoughts, higher than the 17% California average These insights, hidden in aggregated data, are vital for targeted interventions and resource allocation. Progress is being made: • Updated federal standards now separate AAPI categories • California legislation requires more specific AAPI subgroup data However, challenges remain in implementation and data sharing. ⚡️ Spotlight Series⚡️ Meet Vanessa Villaverde, a senior program investment officer at the California Health Care Foundation. She’s building partnerships and investments aimed at expanding access to capital for health entrepreneurs who are building culturally and linguistically appropriate tech solutions. Health care solutions specifically to meet the needs of Latinx, Black, Asian-American Pacific Island, and other underserved communities. Because too often entrepreneurs of color have to rely on family and friends to support their businesses to get started – as 72 percent of Latino entrepreneurs do today. And that keeps health care tech solutions out of the hands of patients and improving their well-being. Learn more about how CHCF is working with partners like the @National Health IT Collaborative to boost investments for Latinx founders. #LatinoHeritageMonth #HispanicHeritageMonth #HealthcareTech

Thank you to Capitol Weekly for hosting it’s “Health Care in California” event. Our own Kara Carter joined a panel of experts to discuss the transformative potential of AI in reshaping healthcare delivery. As we at CHCF often stress, innovation must go hand-in-hand with equity and accessibility, especially for California residents served by the health care safety net. We're committed to staying at the forefront of these discussions, ensuring that as California's healthcare system evolves, it does so in a way that improves care for all Californians, particularly those with low incomes. We look forward to continuing this important conversation. #AIinHealthcare #HealthEquity #CaliforniaHealthcare #CHCF #ResponsibleAI
