Protecting Blue Whales Blue Skies program’s “success, and the fate of our ocean’s largest inhabitants, largely depends on our willingness to bridge industry, agency, for- and non-profit divides, sharing in responsibility and a commitment to make our supply chains better for all of us, including marine life.” – Becca Tucker, Director of Corporate Engagement, Blue Whales Blue Skies Learn more about our new partner, Limoneira, and what drives them to support responsible shipping practices that reduce the risk of fatal whale strikes, and air and marine noise pollution in our new blog at https://lnkd.in/g4mjKzxJ!

Advancing the understanding and stewardship of ocean resources
About us
Since 1995, the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation (CMSF) has worked to protect California's coastal ecosystems while strengthening coastal resilience in the face of population growth, urban and industrial uses, climate change, and resource extraction. Working together with local communities, government agencies, tribal communities, harbors and marinas, and NGOs, we identify and then implement practical and effective solutions to lessen human impacts and increase stewardship of our state's coastal resources. CMSF serves a unique and important niche in California's conservation community by fostering strong public-private partnerships that result in greater impact than going it alone. CMSF consistently enlists a strategic approach connecting key players with real solutions. Our core focus is on improving coastal resilience by using an interdisciplinary approach. Core areas of focus include: water quality protection, marine resource protection, science communications and outreach, interpretation and community science, and climate change mitigation.

CMSF is proud to be a partner in the Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies Program, featured last week in this New York Times article https://lnkd.in/g5sTstsA
https://lnkd.in/g5sTstsA A recent July 2, 2024 NYT article highlights the Protecting Blue Whales & Blue Skies Program: > [The 2023 season] "had the most participants ever — 33 companies. 81% of the total distance their ships traveled through the reduction zones was at the recommended speed of 10 knots or less, and that reduced the risk of fatal ship strikes to #whales during the year by 58%. #Slowerships also generate less ocean noise and fewer ghgs and other air pollution." > Context: "About 90% of all consumer goods are shipped by sea, and the volume of maritime cargo has exploded in recent years, causing vessels to increase in size and numbers... *Along the West Coast, an estimated 80 endangered blue, fin and humpback whales are killed by ship strikes annually, as warming waters caused by climate change shift their food sources closer to shore, where they can collide with ships."* > "The ships’ travel data is supplied by Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory, which also runs a tracking program called Whale Safe. This spring, it unveiled a real-time tool showing which shipping companies operating in North American waters are abiding by speed limits... Rachel Rhodes, a project scientist at the laboratory, said that the detailed reports had compelled several poorly graded companies to improve their scores. 'People are starting to prioritize this...No one wants to hit a whale.'" #supplychainsustainability
And the Winner Is … the Slowest!

California Marine Sanctuary Foundation reposted this
https://lnkd.in/gKKrw_92 Alongside Port of Hueneme (one of our Ambassadors), we recognized global #shipping companies leading the way for their voluntary participation in the Program during a recent #WorldOceansDay celebration. Robert Mazurek: "It is very exciting to partner with NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, the air quality agencies, and industry on a program where everyone can see such clear benefits. This collaboration is a win for #cleanair, #endangered and threatened #whales, and ocean conservation.” Also, congratulations to Port of Hueneme— "... the Port of Hueneme and Oxnard Harbor District made a historic commitment to achieve zero #emissions across all operations within the next six years. Kristin Decas, CEO and Port Director of Port of Hueneme, announced the port’s vision for a cleaner, healthier future. The ambitious decarbonization project, slated for completion by 2030, positions Port Hueneme as a global leader in sustainable port management."
