The POST mission is to continually enhance the professionalism of California law enforcement in serving its communities.
About us
The Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) was established by the Legislature in 1959 to set minimum selection and training standards for California law enforcement. The POST organization, with more than 130 staff members, functions under the direction of an Executive Director appointed by the Commission. POST funding comes from the State Penalty Fund, which receives money from penalty assessments on criminal and traffic fines. Therefore, the POST Program is funded primarily by persons who violate the laws that peace officers are trained to enforce. No tax dollars are used to fund the POST Program. The POST Program is voluntary and incentive-based. Participating agencies agree to abide by the standards established by POST. More than 600 agencies participate in the POST Program.

#GetToKnowPOST – The Peace Officer Standards Accountability Division is POST’s newest division. It is comprised of six bureaus: four professional conduct bureaus covering districts throughout California, the Certification Bureau, and the Intake and Disposition Bureau. The division has many roles including issuing professional certificates to peace officers who meet all the criteria to be certified in the state of California. Another role of the division is to review investigations submitted by law enforcement agencies and conduct additional investigations into serious misconduct. The division makes findings on the investigations, reviews grounds for decertification or suspension, and determines whether to recommend action against an officer’s certification. The division reports the findings to the Peace Officer Standards Accountability Advisory Board who hold public meetings to review the cases and make recommendations to the POST Commission. The Commission then reviews those recommendations made by the board based on whether there is evidence that reasonably supports the board’s conclusion that misconduct has been established. If action is to be taken against an officer's certification, the Commission returns the determination to the division to commence formal proceedings consistent with the Administrative Procedure Act. #ThisIsPOST #CAPOST #CommissionOnPOST
