CSG Maritime Unit Saves Life of Paddleboarder on San Francisco Bay By SPC (CA) James Colbert Sacramento, California – In a remarkable display of skill and preparation, on January 21, the California State Guard (CSG) Maritime Command responded to a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) distress call for a person in the water in need of assistance. The crew of the Maritime Coastal Command ONE (MCC1) 47-foot motor lifeboat (MLB) with a crew of nine was performing routine training exercises on the waters of the San Francisco Bay. Two calls were issued by the USCG requesting assistance to rescue a paddleboarder. The strong currents had pulled the individual into the bay, stranding him in the frigid waters, wind, and rain. Struggling with the increasing effects of hypothermia, he was unable to get back ashore. As the first vessel to reach the scene, MCC ONE’s crew, working seamlessly with USCG Sector San Francisco and a USCG MH-65E Dolphin helicopter, executed a well-coordinated "man overboard recovery.” They extracted the victim from the water and rendered first aid for hypothermia. “This is what we train for, to serve the citizens of California. The crew performed flawlessly. Their skill and professionalism represent the very best qualities of the CSG,” said LT (CA) James Lamb, MCC1 Commanding Officer. The victim was transferred to the Southern Marin County Fire District’s fireboat “Liberty,” which arrived on the scene soon after the rescue, ensuring the victim received continued emergency medical treatment. “The crew of the MLB, in the face of a life-or-death emergency, demonstrated exemplary performance of their duties and exceptional collaboration with other maritime responders on the San Francisco Bay. Their actions reflect their dedication to duty and their commitment to public safety,” said CAPT (CA) Robert A. Baird, Commander, CSG Maritime Command. -- 30 – PHOTO CAPTION Crew members of Maritime Coastal Command ONE (MCC1), California State Guard Maritime Component, with the rescued paddleboarder (in black wetsuit) on San Francisco Bay, Jan. 21, 2024.
