This October, we recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month on a national scale. Officially designated by Congress in 1989, October serves as a time to reflect on the accomplishments of the movement while still thinking about moving ahead to bring awareness to and end domestic violence. Every year, over 10 million adults experience domestic violence in the United States, and 1 in 15 children are exposed to intimate partner violence each year. We encourage reflection and action during this month. Think of ways you can get involved, from having a fundraiser for a local organization combatting the issue, or having conversations around intimate partner violence with family and friends. Most importantly, we implore you to register to vote, and understand how candidates stand on this very important issue. Statistics sourced from Fairleigh Dickinson University. #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth #DVAwarenessMonth

Today is #InternationalEqualPayDay. Across all regions in the world, women are persistently paid less than men, with the gender pay gap estimated at around 20% globally. According to @UNWomen “pay equity matters because it is a glaring injustice and subjects millions of women and families to lives of entrenched poverty and opportunity gaps. At the current rate, we risk leaving more than 340 million women and girls in abject poverty by 2030, and an alarming 4 per cent could grapple with extreme food insecurity by that year. Ensuring workers’ right to organize and bargain collectively is an important part of the solution. Women must be involved in employer and union leadership, enabling legislation that establishes comprehensive frameworks for gender equality in the workplace.”

This #LaborDay, Calling All Crows celebrates women’s decisive contributions to the labor movement throughout history: Hattie Canty, a widowed mother of eight, worked as a maid, cook, housekeeper, and janitor before rising to prominence as one of the most influential labor leaders in American history. She played a key role in organizing a 75-day strike of Las Vegas hotel workers, which marked a turning point in the city's labor movement. Later, as president of the Las Vegas Hotel and Culinary Workers Union Local 226, Canty led 550 culinary workers in the longest strike in U.S. history, lasting six and a half years, solidifying her legacy as what many refer to as one of the greatest strike leaders of all time. Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers in 1962, is a leading figure in the Chicano civil rights movement and one of the most influential labor leaders in American history. Huerta has dedicated her life to advocating for the rights of farmworkers and the broader Latine community. She recently spoke at a panel on rental caps during the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where she highlighted homelessness in America as a glaring example of the failures of capitalism. At just 23 years old, Clara Lemlich Shavelson, a Jewish Ukrainian immigrant, became a leading voice in the labor movement by spearheading the Uprising of 20,000 in 1909 at New York's garment factories. The strike against intolerable working conditions, which involved 20,000 factory workers—primarily young women—was a pivotal moment that sparked 5 years of revolt and transformation in the garment industry. On the eve of the uprising, Lemlich called for a general strike, and alongside her fellow workers, she took a Yiddish oath, pledging, "If I turn traitor to the cause I now pledge, may this hand wither from the arm I now raise." Mary Harris “Mother Jones” was an Irish born American Labor organizer who co-founded the Industrial Workers of the World. Dubbed “the most dangerous woman in America,” Mother Jones was a formidable force in the labor movement known for her ability to rally workers and their families against exploitative mine owners. At the 1902 United Mineworkers of America convention she declared, “My friends, it is solidarity of labor we want. We do not want to find fault with each other, but to solidify our forces and say to each other: We must be together; our masters are joined together and we must do the same thing.”
