Cayla Mihalovich has been on the job all of three weeks CalMatters as a California Local News Fellowship reporter and she already has this strong piece on people who were sterilized in state prisons and then denied payments from a reparations fund created for them. https://lnkd.in/gYYYWTDW
🗳 Do you have questions about the election? How does Prop 5 make it easier for local governments to borrow money? Why would Prop 36 partly roll back another proposition that voters approved in 2014? 🗓 Los Angeles County is home to more than 75,000 unhoused people -- more than two-thirds of whom live on the street, according to the county's point-in-time count data. Measure A is supposed to help change that by raising taxes on certain items sold in the county. What exactly would this measure do, and could it make a dent in the problem? Join us for a free, in-person panel discussion with experts who can help us dig into this issue. This panel discussion will take place on Wednesday, October 9th, from 12:00pm — 1:00pm at Studio MLA. A networking session with free lunch will take place from 11:30am — 12:00pm for attendees and panelists. Our moderator: Marisa Kendall, who covers California's homelessness crisis for CalMatters Our panelists: Lance Christensen, VP of Education Policy and Government Affairs at California Policy Center Tommy Newman, VP of Public Affairs and Activation at the United Way of Greater Los Angeles Cheri Todoroff, Exec. Dir. of the Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative Shawn Morrissey, VP of Advocacy and Community Engagement for Union Station Homeless Services Thank you to our sponsor California Community Foundation, as well as our convening partners Center for Nonprofit Management & SoCal Grantmakers

My latest story is about tech and taxes and California's budget deficit — sorta geeky, but that's me. Thanks to the sources who helped me with this story by sharing their expertise, especially Francine McKenna and Brett Whitaker. #tech #siliconvalley #taxes #california #californiabudget

I love to write headlines, and I especially loved writing this one. Kristen Hwang, Ana B. Ibarra and Erica Yee reported on California's maternity care crisis in a way that could not be ignored. They were the first to quantify the extent of labor ward closures, and they kept at it with a series of stories on why we are losing maternity care services. Well done, CalMatters! https://lnkd.in/gtU9KqbF
As CalMatters’s election coverage hits TikToks and Reels this year, we’re being more intentional than ever about reaching young voters. It’s no different with our in-person VotingMatters event series: Five of the eight events we’ve done so far were at schools and colleges, and that’s by design. Last week, VotingMatters came to the Central Valley with events at schools in Stockton, Sacramento, and Fresno. Students dug into the nuances of each ballot proposition in lively group discussions, and talked about the implications of raising the state minimum wage, allowing local governments to raise rent controls, or reclassifying some misdemeanors as felonies. Thank you to CapRadio, Sac State ASI, The State Hornet, Stocktonia, San Joaquin Delta College and Central East High School for hosting us. I've been steeped in California's property insurance crisis. I had a one-hour, one-on-one interview with Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara at the CalMatters Sacramento studio on Sept. 19, and I moderated a panel about insurance with consumer advocates, the insurance industry and other experts at a Sacramento Press Club event this week. “I learned that the CSU’s Title IX system is broken,” Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball Coach Danelle Bishop told the CSU Board of Trustees. “We deserve a safe and healthy workplace free from abuse, harassment and bullying.” Read my first story with CalMatters on Title IX reform at the Calstate here: https://lnkd.in/gr38w_AK

It's fair to say that just about everyone agrees that lemon law suits clogging California's civil courts is a problem. But is cramming through 14,000 words of a bill/analysis in the final days of the session the right way to reform a popular law -- particularly amid accusations lobbying groups wrote the legislation that's now sitting on Gov. Newsom's desk? My latest for CalMatters is worth your time.
