I’m so happy to share that I will be the creator and founding principal of the 1st HBCU Early College Prep High School in a major metropolitan city and the country; opening next September. At HBCU College Prep, located in Southeast Queens, scholars will engage in the “HBCU experience” and receive a tuition-free associates degree and guaranteed admission to our HBCU partner-Delaware State University. This will be one of the most innovative schools in our lifetime under the supervision of Dr. Josephine Yeboah Van-Ess and the NYC Department of Education (Now New York City Public Schools). 11 years ago today, the first cohort of the Catalyst Fellowship (formerly School Systems Leaders Fellowship - SSLF) met in Washington DC for their second learning experience. Over the past decade, the Fellowship has fostered a vibrant community and the impact is palpable: “I have never experienced the way we were able to build such a tight-knit community so quickly! It was especially impressive considering the size of our group […] I cannot thank Cambiar enough for bringing such brilliant, kind, thoughtful and social justice oriented people into my life. Last week, we had the incredible opportunity to host the 2024 Cohort of the Catalyst Fellowship in Indianapolis. It was a transformative experience filled with learning and collaboration. Here are some highlights: - Systems Strategy: We explored the trade-offs leaders face between centralization and autonomy, gaining valuable insights into effective decision-making. - CREATE Framework: Participants learned how to leverage this framework to drive meaningful, systems-level change in their organizations. - Innovator's DNA: We learned how to implement this approach in our daily work, fostering a culture of innovation. - Insights from IPS Leaders: We had the privilege of hearing from Superintendent Aleesia Johnson, Ed.D. and Deputy Superintendent Andrew Strope, who shared their expertise and experiences in educational leadership. - Coaching Framework: The fellows were introduced to the Immunity to Change (ITC) coaching framework, which they will utilize throughout the cohort year to overcome personal and organizational challenges. It was inspiring to see so much passion and commitment among the fellows. Yesterday, I had the unique opportunity to hear an insightful conversation between two Black female Superintendents. They delved into the challenges facing the education system in Indianapolis and the ways that IPS is leveraging innovation to address these challenges. It’s moments like these that highlight the importance of diverse voices in education. I’m privileged to be part of an organization that supports and amplifies their impactful work.
