The Chamber urges a NO Vote on Question 5. We spoke with our area restaurants, and we strongly urge a No Vote on Question 5. We believe this ballot measure will lead to restaurants closing in our neighborhoods and will lower the income for many employees. A recently completed survey found: 86% of employees think the current tipping system works for them. 90% believe that if tipped wages are eliminated tip employees will earn less. 91% say they prefer the current system, with a lower base wage and tips that provide the ability to earn more than the minimum wage. Servers and bartenders are already mandated to receive the state minimum wage when combining tips with existing wages. Other states that have tried implementing the measure have seen menu prices and service fees increase. This ballot question will burden diners with additional fees and higher menu prices. A NO Vote will keep neighborhood restaurants open.
