If you are at FFI's 2024 Global Conference in London this week, don't miss a great session with Rachel Krol and Patricia Annino: Next Gen Daughters: Negotiate Future Ownership and Leadership Today. They will identify barriers preventing next generation daughters/sisters from taking an active role now in determining their future ownership and leadership in their family enterprise. For many next gen women competing and negotiating with family members are dirty words. They will introduce concrete strategies trusted advisors can use to help a next gen client step into her power, develop her point of view, and ensure that her important perspective is included in future enterprise planning conversations. https://lnkd.in/eAytg3UF

Of all of the potential threats to the success of a family-owned business, one of the most destabilizing can come from inside the family—when an individual owner or a faction of owners attempts to sell their ownership stake to an outside party. While this is a rare occurrence, when it happens, it can bring distress to the system, such as steep financial consequences, embarrassment to the family and company, and injury to family relationships. Just knowing that it could happen is enough to unsettle a business family. A shareholder agreement is a legally-enforceable contract that all—yes, all—family business owners ought to have in place. It is an instrument that resolves multiple concerns, protects against future potential problems, and can be customized to each family’s particular situation. Consider it a good insurance policy. https://lnkd.in/emEccK4

Future ownership and leadership roles in family enterprises can and should be negotiated by next gen women—but that does not happen as often as it should. This important issue will be presented at the FFI Global Conference in London this week by CFEG's Rachel Krol and Patricia Annino. Get a sneak preview in this article. https://lnkd.in/eqMxJM7Y

Take a look at this recently published study - From Family Director Pathos to Board Ethos: Managing Multiple Role Identity Struggles in the Boardroom of Family Firms https://lnkd.in/eKmdnpCV
I am pleased to have contributed to a superb study of family business boards, "From Family Director Pathos to Board Ethos: Managing Multiple Role Identity Struggles in the Boardroom of Family Firms," led by Cristina Bettinelli, Alfredo De Massis and Manisha Singal. We studied how boards with independent members help manage the issues created by the multiple roles that influence family board members. This a common issue that requires careful management. I recommend this article to all interested in making family business boards effective. Please excuse the use of some terminology required in academic journals. https://lnkd.in/eKjkERwq
