Where children with type 1 diabetes can be themselves

About us

Camp Nejeda Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization which funds the operation of Camp Nejeda, a residential summer camp program as well as additional programs throughout the year for children and adults with type 1 diabetes. At Camp Nejeda, youth with diabetes are given the opportunity to live, if only for one or two weeks, in a world where having diabetes is the norm and where there is no need to explain blood sugar testing, finger pricks, insulin injections, ketones, 'lows' (insulin reactions), boluses or 'carb counting.' Both formal and informal educational moments help promote good diabetes management and healthy, active living. Camp Nejeda's Family Camps and other programs offered throughout the year provide empowering fellowship and educational opportunities for individuals with type 1 diabetes of all ages and for their families. As the only facility of its kind in New Jersey and its neighboring states, Camp Nejeda hosts children, teens, and families from across the region. While most are from New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, we have regular campers from Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and elsewhere. The Camp Nejeda Foundation subsidizes about half of the cost of camp for all our campers and provides additional financial assistance to approximately 30% of our campers each year. Campership awards range from 20% to 100% support. Most awards are for 100%. Camp Nejeda is fully licensed by the New Jersey Department of Health and accredited by the American Camp Association. ACA accredited camps meet up to 300 standards for health, food service, safety, and program quality.

Our 2024 Survive and Thrive was wonderful! Thank you to staff, volunteers, donors and sponsors. Insulet, Beta Bionics and Tandem all attended and we had amazing presenters providing new insights for adults with Type 1.

Survive and Thrive 2024: Anyone with Type 1 diabetes can attest it is no easy feat. It is survival on a microscopic level of counting carbs, calculating doses, changing pump and cgm sites every other day while listening to alarms, beeps and paying attention to numbers in order to mimic what a fully functioning pancreas might do. It's hard to imagine how one might thrive under these circumstances. To be diagnosed with anything where the body seems as though it will never be the same. To learn how to manage and function in a new way as never before. To see the world in a new way and rise to the occasion. Now that's thriving, isn't it? But what of feeling normal in this state of malfunction through no fault of your own? What does that look like? This is where Camp Nejeda Survive and Thrive comes in. Adults newly diagnosed only a few months in come together with peers, some of them diagnosed over fifty years ago when beeps and technology were only a dream. They offer perspective, stories, comradery, meals, workshops and most important laughter through shared experiences. A gentleman who came to us for the first time, diagnosed 32 years prior, said it most eloquently the last morning of camp: When you join For a common cause Sharing a common burden And tell your stories The burden It becomes less leavy Because you are carrying it together What a beautiful way to survive and thrive, indeed.
