We help campuses institutionalize reforms that empower students to vote. Part of the Fair Elections Center Family.

About us

The Campus Vote Project, launched by Fair Elections Center in 2012, is a campaign to help college students work with administrators and local election officials to make the process of voting easier and overcome barriers students often face to voting that students often mention such as residency laws, registration deadlines, and strict voter ID requirements.

Today, Fair Elections Center released the following statement on political violence following Trump's rally in Pennsylvania : "We believe in free and fair elections, the peaceful transition of power, and nonviolent political discourse. Violence has no place in our election process. It is more important now than ever that our country lifts up these hallmarks of democracy if we are to continue towards a more perfect union."

Today, Michelle Kanter Cohen, Policy Director and Senior Counsel at the Fair Elections Center released a statement on House Passage of the so-called “SAVE Act,” which would make it harder for millions of Americans to vote. “The so-called SAVE Act is a cynical attempt fueled by anti-immigrant politicians and conspiracy theorists to make it harder to vote and spread distrust in our elections. As an organization that has litigated against documentary proof of citizenship requirements because they make it harder for eligible people to vote, we’ve seen that hard-to-get and expensive document requirements make it harder for citizens to vote, and don’t solve any problem with our elections. Recent studies show that around ten percent of voting-eligible Americans do not have documents to show their citizenship. Those citizens are more likely to be women, low income people, and from communities of color." Read our full statement: bit.ly/fecsaveact

Today, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth—represented by Fair Elections Center and Kentucky Equal Justice Center—filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Western District of Kentucky challenging a provision in Kentucky election law that mandates the removal of voters from voter registration rolls without following procedures required by federal law. Amendments to state law in 2021 regarding voter removals clearly violate the National Voter Registration Act, we argue. Learn more about the case: bit.ly/kentuckyvoterpurge

Under Pennsylvania law, in order for their ballots to count, voters must record the date they sign their declaration. In late 2023, the Pennsylvania Department of State (DOS) redesigned the outer envelope for mail-in and absentee ballots so that the first two digits of the year (“20”) are preprinted in the handwritten date field. In the April primary elections, certain counties including Lancaster County chose to ignore guidance from DOS urging them to count ballots with envelopes that included the day and month but not the last two digits of the year and adopted a policy to reject such ballots. A lawsuit filed by Pennsylvania Alliance for Retired Americans, represented by Fair Elections Center and LeVan Stapleton Segal Cochran LLC, argues that counties may not lawfully reject these ballots under Pennsylvania statutes and the Pennsylvania Constitution, given that the current year is displayed on the ballots themselves and the year in which they are issued and cast is self-evident. This week, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz signed the Minnesota Voting Rights Act into law. The Minnesota Voting Rights Act prohibits acts that would cause vote dilution or voter suppression of members of a protected class. It also gives the state attorney general, county attorney, or any individual aggrieved by a violation of the bill the right to sue. This will, importantly, provide a method of recourse for harmed voters in the state and combat racial discrimination in the electoral process. Fair Elections Center is committed to ensuring every voice is heard in our democracy. The Minnesota Voting Rights Act takes us one step closer to that goal by putting the right to free and fair elections back in the hands of Minnesota voters.
