#CSIOP Here is October’s Student Column by our wonderful student rep - Jane Phillips This month’s Student Liaison Spotlight is 🥁🥁 Madeline Springle Here is the full column featuring Madeline! “ I’m a second-year PhD student in Industrial-Organizational Psychology at the University of Calgary, where my dissertation focuses on defensive impression management in interviews. I’m exploring how job candidates should respond to challenging questions like, “Why do you have a gap on your resume?” or “Why were you let go from your last job?” I enjoy taking part in knowledge mobilization opportunities and was a top-five finalist in the SSHRC Storytellers (https://lnkd.in/ehbx8M_w) competition last year. This summer, I launched a YouTube channel, Master Your Interview with Madeline (https://lnkd.in/eZUj7aVX), where I share insights on asynchronous/pre-recorded video interviews, drawing from my Master’s research and other projects. My top tip for video interviews is to practice filming yourself out loud. Speaking out loud on camera feels very different than thinking through an answer in your head. https://lnkd.in/eHSErx52 Also, practice varying response lengths—short, medium, and long—since time limits can differ between interviews.”

What tools and computational methods, new and old, will enable us to select people for jobs with unparalleled accuracy and little human intervention? And what will the work landscape, and our larger society, look like when we get there? In this Practice Makes Perfect episode, I discuss with Dr. Piers Steel, Professor at the University of Calgary, how improved job and capability analysis are helping us predict future job performance more accurately. We get into some of the technical ways we can accomplish this and explore some big, philosophical questions about what optimizing hiring could mean for us. If you're interested in how technology can help you understand person/job fit and what the future might look like, I hope you'll join us. And I'd love to hear from you and whether you agree with our assessments! Canadian Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology - CSIOP/SCPIO #IOPsych
