About us

CanSat is a student lead design team with the explicit purpose of competing in an international design-to-flight competition sponsored by industry leaders, such as NASA and Lockheed Martin. Competition objectives change yearly but always focus on a payload ejected from a rocket. We want to get others interested in space and allow graduates and undergraduates to work through the aerospace product development process.

The 2023-2024 season of CanSat has come to a close! This past year was a journey of innovation, growth, and resilience. Our team achieved some incredible milestones, including manufacturing carbon fiber for the first time, pushing our 3D printing skillset to get more precise prints with fewer print failures, and developing future proof flight software with built in-redundancies, optimized to work on our microcontroller’s limited resources. Attached below is a photo of our CanSat's initial prototype coming together. Competing with over 100 teams ranging from undergraduate to PhD students, we placed 38th; we are proud of our hard work! However, the road wasn't always smooth. We overcame challenges, including mechanical design failures and an overheating PCB. Each setback pushed us to learn, adapt, and come back stronger. Proud of the perseverance and determination of the entire team; we managed to build a CanSat that was significantly under the weight, cost and size limits! Here's to the next chapter!
