Congratulations to Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) inventors Elissa Trueman, Jacob Steiner, and Peter Todoroff who were granted U.S. Patent Number: 12,084,775 B1 today titled “Passivation Of Copper-Nickel Alloy Conduits for Marine Use”. This invention is for a system to continuously circulate a solution of nickel hydroxide and seawater through copper-nickel alloy piping to make the piping more corrosion resistant. This system can reduce the period to prepare the piping for use from 21 days to 7 days thus shortening the service time of the piping. This saves time initially and every time the piping is cleaned as it then needs to be re-treated for corrosion resistance. The innovation represented in this patent and others from Carderock and the other Navy labs can reduce maintenance times and thus improve the availability of Navy ships to perform their mission! #patents #innovation

Huge thanks to everyone who participated in and attended our inaugural 3D Scanning Industry Day Event (SIDE) in Bethesda MD on August 22, just up the road from our home base, Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) , with our PIA, Pike District Partnership! We had an excellent kick off from MC Matthew Herrmann and Montgomery County Economic Development Corp President and CEO Bill Tompkins. Cindy Waters , Elissa Trueman, PhD, PE and Neal Orringer made for a fantastic Leadership Perspectives panel, providing insights into where and why the intersection of government and industry is critical for growth in this field. Our Reverse Engineering and Digital Metrology panels brought together some amazing government and industry SMEs who dove into some of the technical details, obstacles, and successes at their respective organizations. Our luncheon speaker, Michael Raphael, brought the energy and was able to share his vast experience with attendees in such a way that everyone left the event with a new understanding of the value of 3D scanning. The event would not have been possible without the support of Carderock leadership, Ryan Fisher and the Additive Manufacturing and Advanced Manufacturing teams, and the Pike District Partnership teams. It was a smashing success and we can't wait to bring you more potential collaboration opportunities between Carderock, the Navy, our local ecosystem here in Montgomery County, and beyond! #3Dscanning #advancedmanufacturing #smallbusiness #industryday #collaboration #navalxtechbridge NavalX
Participted in the 3D Scanning Industry Day Event hosted by Lauren Hanyok from #CapitalTechBridge and #NSWCCarderock in conjunction with Pike District Partnership #PDP. Had a great time serving on a leadership panel with Cindy Waters and Neal Orringer. Thanks to all for a great event! If you are a non-traditional or small business that wants to work with the government these are folks you should contact. #3Dscannig

Congratulations to Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) inventors Suok-Min Na, Nick Jones, and Paul Lambert who were granted U.S. Patent Number U.S. Patent No. 12,060,627 B1 on Aug 13 titled “Hard Magnetic Properties of High Entropy Alloys (HEAs), Methods for Making HEAs, and Uses Thereof”. This invention is for several types of so-called High-Entropy alloys which consists of various fractions of iron, nickel, cobalt, aluminum, copper and titanium with the goal permanent magnet materials for various applications. This research is to explore alternatives to rare-earth metals for magnets as there are still significant availability challenges for the rare earths. This patent describes the alloy formulation and alternatives and methods to produce and measure the properties of these HEAs. This kind of fundamental R&D is what keeps our Navy afloat and resilient. #patents #innovation

Congratulations to Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) inventors Paul Lambert, Matthew Draper, Matthew Sinfield, and Daniel Bechetti who were granted U.S. Patent Number 12,054,817 B1 on Aug 6 titled “High-Strength and High-Toughness Austenitic Steel ”. This invention is an austenitic steel composition with increased strength and fracture toughness. The Navy has the challenge that ship structural steels must simultaneously have properties that often aren’t found in the same material. One of these properties is high strength in structural steel that can take a lot of stress in the structure while being resistant to breaking (fracturing). We also need it to be weldable and affordable. This patent describes the material formulation and alternates that can get this done. This kind of fundamental R&D is what keeps our Navy afloat and resilient. #patents #innovation

Congratulations to U.S. Naval Research Laboratory Lab inventor Gordon Waller and Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) inventor Danielle Paynter who were jointly granted U.S. Patent Number 12,054,407 B1 on Aug 6 titled “Apparatus, Methods and Systems for Treating Oil-In-Water Emulsions”. This invention describes a technique to use electrocoagulation to break up oil-water emulsions in shipboard wastewater. Oil removal is typically achieved by mechanical separation, but that is very difficult with modern lubricants. Further in the patent, the inventors describe the controllers, apparatus and alternative methods to implement electrocoagulation to treat shipboard wastewater. These shipboard systems are critical to the continual high demand for operation of Navy ships and the welfare of the sailors protecting our country as sea. #patents #innovation

The Pike District Partnership and Capital Tech Bridge invite you for the first inaugural Scanner Industry Day Event (SIDE). SIDE will provide 3D scanning industry, academia and government/military partners the opportunity to learn more about the 3D scanning and how existing commercial solutions can be leveraged to address a range of challenges. 3D scanning is a powerful digital tool that is used widely across a broad range of industries from healthcare to entertainment and is actively employed by Navy engineers, scientists and the fleet to quickly capture information to solve problems fast. The event will be a chance to learn more from industry on the tech floor with demos and examples, hear from industry leaders and network with industry, academia and government officials. The event will be hosted at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Convention Center on Thursday, August 22, 2024 from 8am – 5pm. The PDP is hosted in the Pike District, the urban core of North Bethesda and home to a growing center of innovation. The partnership between the PDP, Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) and the Capital Tech Bridge serves to better facilitate innovation for the Navy warfighter by connecting small businesses, academia, and non-traditional partners to tackle requirements that NSWC Carderock addresses for NAVSEA Warfare Centers (NSWC/NUWC) and Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). Congratulations to Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) inventors Phil Dudt, John Nasrin, and Hiren Balsara who on July 23rd were granted U.S. Patent Number 12,046,400 B1 titled “Granular Magnetically Strengthened Structures”. This invention is a method for strengthening cylinders to pressure with a combination of magnetorheological fluids and granules. The magnetorheological fluid stiffens in an applied magnetic field and the granules interact via friction to enhance the stiffness. The result is a smart material where you can dial in the stiffness as needed. #patents #innovation
