"Child care costs have risen 220% since 1990, significantly outpacing inflation, according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation. 'When you see child care coming in at the No. 1 spot on the list of household expenses, beating out rent or even college tuition, you begin to understand the magnitude of this issue.'" — Sean Lacey, general manager of child care Great reporting from Daniel de Visé for USA TODAY on the untenable costs of child care. We have to keep talking about this. ⤵️

Child care has grown so expensive that full-time care now costs more than rent in 16 of the nation’s 100 largest cities, according to a new report.   LendingTree, the personal finance site, compared the monthly cost of infant care to average rents for a two-bedroom home in big cities.  In quite a few cities, the analysis found, child care is the greater expense. In Syracuse, New York, child care costs $1,417, on average, LendingTree found. Monthly rent for a two-bedroom unit costs $1,126. In Spokane, Washington, child care averages $1,588 a month. Rent averages $1,304. In Minneapolis, Minnesota, child care costs $1,767, on average. Rent costs $1,622. Here's the full report, featuring Sean Lacey of Care.com, Matt Schulz of LendingTree, Leslie Williams Boissiere of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, and Sandra Bishop, Ph.D. of Child Care Aware of America.

Amidst a seemingly divided political landscape, child care stands out as a shared priority that transcends party lines. Senators Katie Britt (R-Ala.) and Tim Kaine (D-Va.) have come together to introduce a comprehensive child care package aimed at addressing one of the most pressing challenges facing American families today. Bryan Jamele had the honor and privilege of sitting down with Senator Britt and Senator Kaine to delve into the details of their proposal, what this effort means for the future of child care in the U.S, and the significance of bipartisan collaboration. “When I returned from parental leave, I made sure to start the habit of signing off properly at the end of the day to focus on spending time with Adam and Sara, and that has made such a difference.” Working parents know how tough the shift from work to family can be, and we love this advice from Cory Phillips, Principal Software Engineer. At Care, we’re moms, dads, daughters, sons, caregivers, and pet parents, which is why the work we do is so important to us. It’s also why we know first-hand just how tough it can be to juggle family and career responsibilities. We asked the working parents of Care to share what really helps them, well, work. We want to hear from you! Do you have a routine that helps you shift from work mode to family mode? Please share in the comments.

When U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued his advisory on the mental health and well-being of parents, many were shaken — but not surprised, since they're living it. Sean Lacey, General Manager of Child Care, spoke to Daniel de Visé for USA TODAY to share some of the contributing stressors, like fewer daycares, which lead to even longer waitlists. If you need help filling the gap while you wait for a spot to open up, we're here for you.

What benefit really changed the game for you? Please share in the comments.   Carolyn Livingston, Business Development Director, shared how one our most popular benefits, Backup Care, has taken her family from babyhood to elementary school. We love her reminder that it’s not just for child care.   "Backup Care has been a game changer for me, helping us navigate various phases of life over the past decade.   When our boys were babies, Backup Care came to the rescue on numerous occasions. Having someone I could call, who could almost immediately secure a trusted backup caregiver from a local nanny agency, was invaluable.   In 2020, when our boys' schools unexpectedly closed, Backup Care again saved the day by helping to bridge the gap while we found a more permanent solution. That permanent solution ended up being pre-K and 1st-grade education pods run by experienced teachers we found using our Care.com premium membership.   As a true example of the “sandwich generation,” I’ve also utilized both the Adult Care Planning and Adult Backup Care benefits.   I can't imagine navigating the past decade without all the amazing support I’ve received through my care benefits. I am forever grateful."

Insightful discussion between Wes Burke of Care.com, Erika Ensign of Leavitt Group, Yvette Marsh of LSU Foundation, Lynn Perkins of UrbanSitter, and Lee Hafner of Employee Benefit News, on “The Business Case for Care in the Workplace” at Benefits at Work 2024. A key insight: Point solution fatigue is hitting employers, employees, and consultants hard. With 5+ separate solutions for employee wellbeing and lifestyle benefits, companies are making it difficult for employees to find what they need. Care.com and UrbanSitter have gained traction by offering all-in-one solutions for child and elder care. But what’s missing? What if employers want to support families in more ways like subsidizing family planning, fertility/adoption, or providing for big-ticket items like strollers for new parents? What about tutoring, extracurricular programs for kids, or even contributing to a child’s college fund? These are exactly the types of needs an LSA can address, offering employees comprehensive support without the hassle of juggling multiple platforms. It gives employees real choice—the most people-first way to show your workforce you care. #familycare #eldercare #employeebenefits #peopleandculture #employeewellbeing #wellnessbenefits
