After compiling statistics on veteran suicides from a FOI submitted in May this year, the numbers are alarming. Initially estimated at around 400+, the data revealed a higher toll. Since 2017, the losses exceed 500, with more yet to be reported. It's important to note that many suicides go unaccounted for in official statistics. At CSRW and Wellness, we specialize in addiction and mental health, witnessing firsthand the impact of combat and life on military personnel. Suicide is preventable, and we serve as a guiding light for many males struggling in the darkness. #VeteranSuicidePrevention #MentalHealthAwareness #SupportOurTroops

Huge thank you to Roanoke Fire Department for spending their day teaching children about fire safety. At Care Star, we treat first responders (and military) only. We specialize in working with the people who protect our country! My grandchildren learned a lot and we had a fun day with our first responders.

Trooper Kevin Alexis Ramirez Vasquez, 25, was investigating a traffic crash along SH 302 when he was struck by a vehicle around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Trooper Ramirez Vasquez suffered serious injuries and was taken to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. He was then airlifted to a Lubbock-area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Sept. 28. “There are no words to ease the loss of one of our brothers in uniform,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “Texas Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Alexis Ramirez Vasquez served this state honorably to his very last breath. His commitment to keeping the roads safe, protecting the people of Texas and the sacrifice he made will never be forgotten. Today, I ask that you keep his family, friends and colleagues in your prayers during the difficult days ahead.” Trooper Ramirez Vasquez began his law enforcement career when he joined DPS in 2023. He was stationed in Odessa. Trooper Ramirez Vasquez lived a life of service, serving in the United States Army prior to joining the department, and he was currently serving in the National Guard. He is the 241st DPS officer to die in the line of duty since 1823. Trooper Ramirez Vasquez is survived by his parents and three siblings. https://lnkd.in/gWNGVRaA

Despite military veterans having a higher prevalence of several common psychiatric disorders relative to non-veterans (Albright et al., 2020; Inoue et al., 2022; Manhapra et al., 2021), limited research has evaluated racial/ethnic disparities in the prevalence of these disorders. Research that has examined racial/ethnic differences in PTSD found opposite racial/ethnic disparities among veterans than those observed in the general population, with one population-based study showing that Black veterans experienced significantly higher rates of lifetime PTSD (11.0%) than White veterans (6.0%; Smith et al., 2016). Additionally, Black veterans who had recently ended active military service were more likely to screen positive for PTSD compared to any other racial or ethnic group (McClendon et al., 2019). At Care Star Recovery and Wellness, we acknowledge the racial disparity for veterans who are people of color, disparities in access to care, and misdiagnosis due to race. CSRW has a diversity and inclusion officer to ensure equality amongst all who use our services. We also have a culturally diverse staff to ensure that everyone has someone to connect to. https://lnkd.in/g3Hk6aiM

As law enforcement officers are regularly exposed to unique stressors during the course of their occupation, they are at elevated risk of developing mental health problems, usually in the form of PTSD. Indeed, previous literature has identified that law enforcement officers endorse higher rates of mental health problems than the general population. Despite this, many officers do not seek mental health treatment - often because they face consequences on the job. Sometimes it is financial consequences. Sometimes it is shame from other officers. Sometimes, seeking PTSD support costs them their career. At Care Star Recovery and Wellness, we treat military and first responders only. We know, often first hand, the consequences of getting help. And of not getting help.
