The U.S. Surgeon General reports 1 in 2 adults are chronically lonely increasing our risk for chronic diseases including #Alzheimer's It is especially important in our older population to have social interaction on a daily basis and often that is the challenge for family caregivers. Seek the support that you and your loved one need. And remember, family and professional caregivers need hugs too!

Can hormones make you happy? Oxytocin is one of the four happiness hormones I write about in my book, “Me Time Monday – The Weekly Wellness Plan to Find Balance and Joy for a Busy Life.” It is the hormone created by social groups, tribes, families, friends and lovers – our love, trust and bonding hormone. Loneliness and social isolation creates a lack of oxytocin that threatens our ability to survive and thrive. Science shows we receive bursts of oxytocin release by being physically close to others – holding hands, hugging, kissing, staring into someone’s eyes. It creates a warm feeling and calms our stress. In fact, one study found 8 hugs a day actually produces enough oxytocin to promote better brain health. Think of oxytocin as one of your natural happy pills. As spokesperson for Comfort Keepers National Day of Joy, I encourage you to explore their in-home caregiving services to give your elder patient or loved one a boost of joy. Their caregivers are specially trained to create moments that enrich the lives of older adults.

We understand #caregiving can be challenging but it can also provide unexpected silver linings. The key is to ask for and accept help - especially from professional caregivers - so you get a break for yourself to refuel your energy and remain positive on the caregiving journey. Our CEO Sherri Snelling was tapped to be a spokesperson for Comfort Keepers on themes from her book, Me Time Monday, including: #Positivity - check out her post below for October's #PositiveThinkingMonth!

October is both #NationalGratitudeMonth and #NationalPositiveThinkingMonth which reminds me to send a big thanks to Comfort Keepers for asking me to serve as their spokesperson on their #NationalDayofJoy, the Power of #Positivity and #Alzheimer’s #Caregiving. These are major themes included in my book “Me Time Monday – The Weekly Wellness Plan to Find Balance and Joy for a Busy Life.” In the book I write about vibrational energy for mental health and how it is creating a new health care field called vibrational medicine. Science shows us that we absorb the energy of those around us. If we are around people who are positive and joyful, we pick up on these “feel good vibes” and boost our positive emotions and mental health (the opposite is also true where we can attract negative energy). By creating joyful moments and working with joyful people, like my friends at Comfort Keepers, we improve our happiness, health and longevity. For family caregivers, we all need support from people with positive energy so check out the home care services of the joyful workers at Comfort Keepers as part of your care team.

Alzheimer’s is not just a concern for older adults—lifestyle choices made as early as your 20s can significantly impact your risk. In fact, 40% of cases could be prevented by: ·      Increasing physical activity ·      Following a MIND diet (especially avoiding processed meats) ·      Quitting smoking and reducing alcohol intake ·      Staying socially active and balancing online (URL) and offline interactions (IRL) ·      Managing blood pressure, cholesterol, vision, and hearing ·      Minimizing exposure to air pollution and wildfire smoke To optimize brain health, remember to exercise both body and mind—engage in activities that stimulate all five senses and keep your brain sharp. #WorldAlzheimersDay Comfort Keepers
