How municipalities and communities effectively handle the environmentally sound removal/processing of garbage and recycling materials can often be misunderstood by the general public. It's for that reason we'd like to share the following Concentrate article that answers big questions surrounding "how Ann Arbor's material recycling facilities actually recycle." On September 29th, the City of Ann Arbor's Material Recycling Facility (MRF) held public tours where common recycling questions and more were answered. The MRF, which is operated by Recycle Ann Arbor, hosted the event as part of the "Trash Talk Tour," organized by the recycling advocacy organization ZeroWaste.Org. As planning professionals supporting municipalities in our great state of Michigan, we at Carlisle | Wortman Associates (CWA) strive to provide continuous and accurate support. In a recent American Planning Association blog entry, the topic of map/data inconsistency is discussed as a common mistake that can cause an "erosion of public trust." "Ideally, every zoning district displayed on a map has a clear, corresponding, set of rules in the text, and every decision to change district boundaries triggers a quick map update. But what happens when reality falls short of this ideal?" In 2022, the Michigan Association of Planning (MAP) published the “Zoning Reform Toolkit: 15 Tools to Expand Housing Choice + Supply" which was funded by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. The overall goal was to provide "planners and other professionals (a tool) to address Michigan’s housing shortage, estimated to be at least 75,000 units shy of the current need and growing." Nearly 3 years on, we'd like to highlight MAP's "Stories and Studies" project - a "series (that) explores what MAP heard from the 100+ Michigan communities who answered a "short questionnaire about the Zoning Reform Toolkit, about zoning reform generally, and specifically about use of the Toolkit to inform housing decisions." It is not a secret that Detroiters are proud of the community roots-driven actions that have been crucial to so many redevelopment and revitalization projects throughout the city. We at CWA would like to share the following Model D Media article that discusses how "two historic sites on opposite ends of town have each received recognition for what community stakeholders have accomplished in Detroit, with Corktown’s Roosevelt Park and the new Jason Hargrove Transit Center at the former State Fairgrounds each receiving design awards recently." According to a new "Zoning Practice" study written by Anika Singh Lemar - the American Planning Association's digital publication that analyzes trends and spotlights innovation in local land use and development regulation - "discretionary land use approvals make it challenging for planners and local officials to advance broader policy priorities, such as expanding housing supply." They're findings suggest that the answer "may not be more participation but, rather, better participation."
