  • 🖼️🎃 Welcome back to day two of the Carnegie Museums #MuseumHauntdown, where we show off art and objects from each of our four museums leading up to Halloween that fit right into the feeling of the season. This photograph by Charles "Teenie" Harris from Carnegie Museum of Art’s collection is perfect for the season, depicting a young child dressed up as a mummy while trick or treating back in 1959 right here in Pittsburgh. 📸: Charles “Teenie” Harris, Child wearing saddle shoes and Halloween mummy costume trick or treating at Charles “Teenie” Harris's house, 7604 Mulford Street, Homewood, 1959, Carnegie Museum of Art, Heinz Family Fund, © Carnegie Museum of Art

  • 🦕🎃 It's that wonderful time of the year again for the Carnegie Museums #MuseumHauntdown, where we show off art and objects from each of our four museums leading up to Halloween that fit right into the feelings of the season. Fred the Crystal Skull at Carnegie Museum of Natural History makes an appearance in Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems right around Halloween just about every single year. The skull was carved and polished from a single quartz crystal with modern tools in Brazil and was donated to the museum in 2004 by South American Gems, Ltd located in Guarapari, Espirito Santo, Brazil. He was named after the step-father of Marc Wilson, former Head of the Section of Minerals from August 1992 to August 2017. 📸: Debra Wilson, Collection Manager of Minerals at Carnegie Museum of Natural History

  • 🐸 The final Expedition Borneo Biodiversity Spotlight is appropriately all about frogs! Today we’re taking a gander at Ansonia, a genus of toads found almost exclusively in the Bornean region. There are over 36 species a part of this genus, and many of them are endemic to Borneo (meaning they’re only found there). Some of our incredible amphibian friends in the Ansonia genus include Ansonia leptopus, the Matang stream toad, and Ansonia minuta, the tiny stream toad. As you might notice, they can be quite difficult to distinguish from outward appearance alone, which is why much of Associate Curator of Amphibians & Reptiles at Carnegie Museum of Natural History Jennifer Sheridan’s research places great focus on recording their unique calls. With data on how these spectacular toads chirp, croak, and warble, Jennifer’s team can distinguish species in the field, augment the existing library of known calls, and determine if there is undescribed species diversity in western Sabah. Head to https://lnkd.in/eTrT2Nan to learn even more about Jennifer’s research and the biodiversity of Borneo!

  • 🥫 In this video, Warren Mayer, an educator with The Andy Warhol Museum, explores Andy Warhol’s late-career experimentation with sewn photographs, in which he expanded his use of visual repetition by physically stitching photographs into grids. Viewers will explore two different approaches to replicating this innovative technique. Check out more Making It videos, where artist educators demonstrate short, accessible, hands-on activities inspired by Andy Warhol’s life, art, and legacy. which are designed to spark creativity and engagement for makers of all ages and skill levels: bit.ly/MakingItSewnPhotos

  • 🐧 The internet has fallen in love with Pesto the young King Penguin, but did you know that Carnegie Museum of Natural History has one of their own? "Aptenodytes patagonicus", otherwise known as the King Penguin, chicks have very specialized downy, brown feathers compared to the look of their fully grown counterparts. 14-16 months after hatching they will molt and go to sea during the following spring. #CarnegieMuseums #4Museums #PestoThePenguin
