Old School Hacking vs. Modern Cybercrime When I was walking my dog this morning, I walked by this open telecom box which was once the way that spies, hackers, and phreakers alike had to physically break into in order to tap phone lines. It reminded me that once upon a time, (think 1980s and 1990s), hacking and phreaking were akin to digital wizardry performed by a select few who could speak the arcane language of modems and payphones. Fast forward to today, and we're living in a cyberpunk reality where everyone's grandma is just a click away from accidentally funding a supervillain's lair. Back in the day, a 'phreaker' could whistle their way through a phone system to score free long-distance calls. It was more about beating the system and less about grand larceny. (Steve Wozniak and @Steve Jobs) are notorious for having been phreakers) Today's hackers are less about the whistles and more about the wrecking balls to our digital lives. What happened today with CrowdStrike was a stark reminder of how much things have changed in only 30 years. Some other examples of how far we have come to put us ourselves at such high risk are: Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) vs. Social Media Mayhem: BBSs were like a local coffee shop—small, cozy, and with a good chance the barista knew your name. Now, social media is the all-you-can-eat buffet where you might just find your personal data on the menu. Modem Magic to Broadband Banditry: Dial-up connections so slow, even sniggles the snail would be impatient, but they also kept our exposure to threats relatively low. Now, with high speed internet, we leave our front door open with a neon "Rob Me" sign. Internet of Things (IoT) or Internet of Threats?: Remember when the only thing your fridge did was keep your food cold? Now it can order groceries online, play music, and—if not secured—potentially leak your secret cake recipes to cybercriminals. The Domino Effect of Doom: One vulnerability exploited in a hyperconnected system can lead to a catastrophic cascade of failures. It's like pulling the wrong Jenga block in a game of "secure-the-network." Today it was just an update to a system that CrowdStrike initiated, but tomorrow it could a real attack that takes down the grid. At least our pup Luna is always on the lookout to protect those people still using landlines for their important phone call. As for the rest of us without her protection: Are We Sitting Duckies in a Pond Full of Cyber Piranhas? To all the Telecom experts out there - if you are looking to figure out the next step in your career - send your resumes to us ASAP. We are planning to build a next generation team to protect physical infrastructure - whether your home, your building, or your nuclear power plant. https://lnkd.in/enXEsgtM
