The Real Deal has spotlighted the transformative work of Senator Nancy Skinner and Casita Coalition on SB 1211—a groundbreaking law set to unlock more affordable housing by further enabling ADUs in multifamily properties. Starting in January, the increased flexibility for type and location of ADUs will expand opportunity for multifamily properties, boosting housing supply with efficiency and speed. Casita Coalition member AvalonBay Communities also featured in the article, is already proving the model’s success, turning spaces into rentable units in as little as nine months! Casita Coalition founder Denise Pinkston Pinkston says, “Multifamily operators know how to do this. They have access to capital and a professional team to get it done.” This movement is gaining national momentum, with housing leaders across the U.S. looking to California as a model. Cited in the article is the "Build the Middle Playbook" by Casita Coalition and Zillow a toolkit helping policymakers and others advance similar reforms nationwide. Thank you to The Real Deal for highlighting this critical solution, and kudos to all the ADU innovators and our community of supporters. Together, we’re turning untapped spaces into opportunities in the midst of a housing crisis. We’re Building the Middle!.🏘✨ Read more:https://lnkd.in/g3JiqhQe #ADUs #MiddleHousing #BuildTheMiddle

About us
The Casita Coalition believes that small homes - ADUs, cottage clusters, and duplexes - can improve housing choice and opportunity throughout California. We promoted recent landmark state ADU laws that now help tens of thousands of California families add a “Casita” to their backyard. Our Coalition includes planners, advocates, academics, builders, architects, business associations, and retired professionals dedicated to working together to expand these naturally affordable “Casitas” through all types of neighborhoods in California. Working in coalition, we develop and share best practices and policies with homeowners, practitioners and decision-makers state-wide. Visit our website to learn more.

Honored to have played a small part in the passage of AB 2533 (J. Carrillo) in partnership with the Casita Coalition and our client Bay Area Council. This powerful blog post by Casita's Board Chair Rafael Perez succinctly illustrates how equity is a necessary component of any housing policy. Housing justice is social justice. https://lnkd.in/dH79xjw3

Exciting News! Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Casita-sponsored AB 2533 into law! This bill is a game changer for legalizing unpermitted ADUs, making it easier, more affordable, and predictable for homeowners. Now, more homeowners can bring their units up to safety standards without breaking the bank, helping to preserve a critical segment of California's naturally affordable rental housing market. This is a huge win for renters, homeowners, and housing stability in our communities! We thank Asm. Carrillo for championing this effort and everyone who supported this vital step toward advancing housing equity and preserving much-needed affordable homes. Our Board Chair, Rafael Perez, has authored a blog on AB 2355, titled "Bringing California's Hidden Housing Out of the Shadows: ADU Amnesty Reform." It features powerful insights from urban planner Jonathan Pacheco Bell, MAUP, MLIS and remarks from Assemblymember Juan Carrillo, highlighting the positive benefits this reform will unlock for communities.
