🔥Heat Caused Over 47,000 Deaths in Europe in 2023 🌍 2023 was the warmest year on record globally 🌡️, and the second warmest in Europe. A recent study by CATALYSE researchers at Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) quantified heat-related deaths in 35 European countries during 2023. The study found Southern Europe - particularly Greece, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Italy, Spain, and Portugal - to be the most affected, with the elderly and women at an especially high risk. Not only did researchers study the burden of heat-related mortality in Europe, they also evaluated adaptation over the last 20 years 🔍. They found that heat-related mortality burden would have been 80% higher ❗ if current adaptation strategies had not been implemented. 🎥 Watch the full interview with researcher Elisa Gallo, explaining the results of the study. Stay tuned to find out about the progress of the heat-health early warning system being created in CATALYSE to promote climate change adaptation and prevent future heat deaths 🌿. About us
Despite clear signs that the impacts of climate change are escalating, the global response has been inadequate. Traditional scientific efforts have fallen short of providing knowledge and tools that have been broadly applied in decision-making, and innovative approaches to knowledge translation are needed. To catalyse climate action in Europe to protect public health, our overarching goal is to provide new knowledge, data, and tools on: i) the relationships between changes in environmental hazards caused by climate change, ecosystems, and human health; ii) the health co-benefits of climate action; iii) the role of health evidence in decision making; and iv) the societal implications of climate change for health systems. This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 101057131, Climate Action To Advance HeaLthY Societies in Europe (CATALYSE)

Happy World Environmental Day! 🌏 Can you spot the differences? 👀
Play our spot the difference game! To celebrate World Environmental Health Day 2024 we’re highlighting the essential role that environmental health plays in tackling climate change, reducing disaster risks, and building resilient communities. Can you spot six differences our research is making when it comes to protecting environmental health? 🕵️♂️🔍 Answers will be revealed this afternoon! Discover the impact of our work at the European Climate-Health Cluster! Stay tuned, by noon the answers will be revealed! Need a hint? Here are a few clues: 🔵 @BlueAdaptEU: Addressing climate-based health risks from pathogens in coastal waters. BlueAdapt explores how pathogens like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites are affected by climate change, identifying policy initiatives to reduce emerging health risks. 🟢 CATALYSE Project : Closing the knowledge-to-action gap in climate change and public health. CATALYSE develops tools to quantify the health co-benefits of mitigation measures, providing evidence and training for effective climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies in European health systems. 🟠 CLIMOS Project: Mitigating the climate-induced spread of vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens. CLIMOS focuses on the emergence and transmission of diseases related to sand fly populations, applying Eco-health and One Health approaches. 🌡 HIGH Horizons EU : Understanding and addressing the health impacts of heat on vulnerable populations in Europe and Africa.A. HIGH Horizons aims to protect pregnant women, newborns, children, and health workers through adaptation and mitigation interventions in health facilities, personalised early warning systems, and policy-oriented work. 🔴 IDAlert: Building resilience to zoonotic pathogens. IDAlert evaluates adaptation and mitigation strategies, developing early warning systems and tools for decision-makers to combat emerging health threats in Europe. 🌍 TRIGGER EU Project : Deepening our understanding of the links between climate, human health, and ecosystems. TRIGGER advances knowledge on these complex relationships to drive societal uptake and policy action. Join CATALYSE researchers for the 2024 International Health Lecture, “Climate crisis, cities and health“, delivered by Professor Mark J Nieuwenhuijsen, a world-leading environmental, epidemiology and health impact expert from ISGlobal and UBDPolicy researcher. In this lecture, Mark will: 👉 Highlight the climate impacts of cities and how this affects population health. 👪 👉 Explore the positive role cities can take in climate action to reduce CO2 emissions and improve health. 🏙 👉 Reflect on the advantages of new urban models, such as London low-traffic neighbourhoods, that promote more climate neutral, liveable, and healthy cities. 🚗 The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session, chaired by Professor Richard Horton OBE FRCP FMedSci, Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet, and Professor Tom Solomon CBE FRCP FMedSci, Vice President (International) at the Academy of Medical Sciences. A networking reception will follow for in-person attendees. Register here 👇 https://lnkd.in/daqF6jdb
