Causal rocks! At our first monthly financial review meeting this week using our new Causal models, our three owners were super impressed. After a brief walk through describing the nuance of the complex reports I've built, our meeting quickly transitioned into substantive strategic discussions for over three hours. New insights into our financial picture were revealed by the Causal charts. We quickly changed model data on the fly to explore the impact of various scenarios that arose during the convos. I also was able to quickly add a new Causal report before the person describing the report was even done describing his request. At the core, Causal absorbed the complexity in our use case and allowed us to see the impact of scenarios on slices of our business in succinct, yet powerful ways that were impossible in Excel. Finally, we were finally able to sunset a monster Excel sheet that had evolved over 8 years! I could say much, much more but I'm uber thankful for the Causal team for an excellent product and extraordinary support!

At 12 years old, Canva is at $2.3B ARR, growing 50%, and profitable. We dug into the data behind this iconic company → go.causal.app/canva Interesting takeaways: 1️⃣ Canva is not slowing down: YoY growth has been at 50% since 2021, and looks like it'll significantly beat that in 2024. 2️⃣ Revenue per employee is growing: with over 4,000 employees, Canva still has $500k+ ARR per head 3️⃣ There's lots of room to grow: Adobe has built a $500B business on top of creative tools over 40+ years Check out the full dashboard here, and shout-out to the folks at Sacra for providing the data behind the dashboard: go.causal.app/canva

This is an announcement I have been waiting to share 🚀 We recently launched Listograms in Causal and it's one of my favorite product releases we have had this year. The Listogram is useful for visualizing data like: - Revenue by Geography - Opex spend by Team/Vendor - Payroll spend by Department/Country etc. We've also introduced the ability to 'roll-up' (e.g. roll-up months into quarters/years) meaning you can now easily see, for example, your Revenue by Country for Q2 2024. We have incorporated Listograms in almost every single one of our internal Causal dashboards. Congrats to the team for shipping this quickly!

Here's how SLG (sales-led growth) helped turn Causal into a PLG (product-led growth) company: We always wanted Causal to be a product like Notion or Figma — valuable for complex use-cases in big companies, but easy to get started with for smaller companies. For our first 18 months, Causal was fully self-serve. People would sign up and try the product out, and we'd reach out to them to get their feedback. Here's the issue, though: most people won't give you feedback, they'll just churn. We were stuck in a rut, where lots of people thought the product was "cool", but no one was sticking around or paying us money. Everything changed in January 2021 when we started doing sales. Instead of signing up for the product, people would book demos on my Calendly link, and I'd actually talk to them. This let us learn things 100x faster: 1. Messaging/positioning: sales gives you real-time feedback on whether your narrative is resonating. Every call is a chance to iterate on how you talk about your product. 2. Product roadmap: when you're doing a demo, prospects will ask "How can I do X?" or "Can this do Y?". This will define your product roadmap. 3. Retention + engagement: we did high-touch customer success, setting up shared Slack channels with each customer. This was a firehose of feedback (and occasional bug reports). Today, Causal is primarily product-led with a bit of top-down sales sprinkled on top. But without the learnings we got during those early sales-led days, the product and business would never have reached the point of maturity that lets us be product-led today.
